Hi All,

I am currently using the Model 7A Super Sustain Match Box on my GFI U-12.

First of all, it doesn't automatically turn itself off and I usually forget to do it myself.

Besides your basic volume & tone control, I would like to see a similarly mounted unit that has various effects available.

I realize this is a lot to ask so perhaps there is another approach I can take to adding effects that are easy to use in a live performance.

Any help appreciated!

Thx,

Gary

Maybe a POD and one of Tommy Dodd's racks to mount it in the edge of your steel would be the answer.

I wouldn't consider a Matchbox as an effect. It will convert the high impedence pickups to a low impedence and tend to clean up the signal. An MXR microamp will do the same thing.

I use a POD (XT or X3) for effects only.

I had an old Matchbox at one time and I added a power on/off switch so I didn't have to remove the guitar cord to power it off.

I put a strip of Velcro on my Matchbox and a strip on the right rear leg of my Sierra. The Matchbox is well anchored and the Volume and Tone contols are easy to reach and adjust.

I didn't know that. I thought it just raised the volume.

I have an MXR micro amp, and have used it to raise the volume for "lead breaks", on guitar & lap steel, in front of EFX.
Never thought of hooking it up to the Pedal steel.
Would you patch it in between the Pedal steel and volume pedal ?

Yes, just like the Matchbox connect it between Guitar and Volume Pedal.

Although it was primarily designed as an amplifier, it will act as an impedence converter the same as a MatchBox or the Lil Izzy devices.

For no effects the Lil Izzy or the Plus is fine but there are no volume controls. It clears it up, changes the impedance (I think) and it fits in your seat. The Matchbox takes up too much room for all the stuff I carry around so I went to this and it's great. When you unplug it the battery is off.

I use the Steel Driver II, which is the matchbox with a fuzz circuit built in. It's an older model, much narrower than the current one. I installed a battery kill switch in the bottom so I don't have to unplug it.

As for the vs. part, I had a Sarno Black Box. When I A/B'd it with the Goodrich the Black Box produced a fuller bottom, but to my damaged ears( damn drummers and their ride cymbals!) the small difference in tone wasn't worth losing the convenience of having a tone and volume control, plus the fuzz ( not that I use it that often) in a lighter and more compact package, right at my fingertips. Plus I've dumped my rack equipment (the MPX-1 was a bear to tweak on the fly) in favor of a much lighter and more compact briefcase of pedals.

The beauty of a match box is you have Vol. and Tone right there at you finger tips and the best effect is (Good Balanced Tone).
Effects are another subject.
I have a POD XT and like that altho still getting used to it.
The thing with effects is.. 6 string guitar players are used to plugging in a new pedal and bam it's cool.
With PSG it seems to take some working with to get an acceptable effect particularly Distortion...

When you have the Goodrich Super Sustain Matchtbox 7A it has a on/off switch on top.
On the front it says battery on/off.
I myself have a 6A and made a on/off switch myself.

I have also found that I prefer the reverb delay after the volume pedal and a distortion effect before Vol.

Hey Jack,
I used my MXR with my PSG, and was impressed with the clarity, and tone improvement. The volume control on it lets me dial in sweet clean passages, or bluesy distorted sounds, and can be controlled with a foot.

I have one of those MXR micro amps, but never used it on the steel. How would it work with a Black Box and Telonics volume pedal? I am under the impression that the Telonics also changes the impedance.

Hi Mike,

Both the black box and the telonics have impedance matching buffers. I would think the microamp would be overkill and create a very harsh bright sound with the two other buffers. Personally, I don't like using another buffer before the Telonics pedal. It changes the sound of the pedal alone.Even the Black Box, which I have, takes some of the clarity from the pedal with my setup.I think the Black Box and its tube works best with an pot pedal IMHO of course.

Mitch, you're probably right about using the micro-amp and the black box together.

Since I already have both units, (As well as the Telonics volume pedal) I will do some experimenting and see which I prefer, or whether my rig sounds better with just the volume pedal by itself.

I use 2 ZT club amps, and a POD XT with very small amount of compression and chorusing between the amps.

My bandmate loaned me his spare POP ver. 2. I played around with it briefly before our show and couldn't find a clean setting anywhere, even in Bypasss mode. I suspect it needs to be reset so I'll have to poke around the Web for the steps.

I really do like the Matchbox... if only it had an automatic power down or better yet a way to power it from a wall wart. I already power my pedal and my Petersen Tuner... why not the MB?

I suspect someone better at electronics than me could figure this one out.

Do you mean POD version 2? Because if you do, I had the same experience. The XT and later models are totally different.

Probably. I suggest you sell it and get an XT or later model instead. The XT is programmable, and Jack Stoner, Tommy Dodd and several others have created have some very good steel patches.

Line 6 has a free application you can download from their web site called Gearbox, with which you can load all the steel patches into the XT and later models.

As far as I know, these cannot be loaded into the earlier POD. I could be wrong about that though.

Mike,

Fortunately the POD is only a loan. As far as programmable effects goes, I do have a really nice Yamaha box laying around that I really ought to give a try.
