I started on a Simmons as my first pedal steel last April, and it was an excellent instrument for me to learn on. I've since loaned it to a dear friend as I now play a '77 MSA Classic D-10.
The solid fingers give the guitar very good sustain, especially on strings that aren't lowered, as they have a nice solid stop against set screws. There is some "mechanical" drop (I hesitate to say "cabinet drop" because I don't believe the cabinet is the cause) on the strings that are lowered, which I believe has more to do with tension on the springs which keep the fingers in a "neutral" position. I did add a (possibly ill-advised) 6th string lower on RKL which made that string particularly prone to this drop, but with the standard setup there was very little drop noticeable on the other strings that were lowered (the 2nd, 4th and 8th). Beyond that, I had very little trouble with it staying in tune in general.
The LKL lever bracket did come loose and needed reinforcement (I still intend to redo that cross-rod at some point to make it more solid and reliable), and the C pedal in particular doesn't like to be stomped too hard because it causes some flex in the wooden pedal board, but those are the only mechanical complaints I ever had. |

I owned and played a simmons and can tell you by far this is one of the best for the buck out there today..save money from buying the old worn out sho buds, marlens etc..or the tin can sounding gfi...or the trash pile carter starters....BUY A SIMMONS-- YOU WONT REGRET IT. _________________ WILCOX SD10 (love the white mica)

I think it depends how you play them. I saw a couple of Marlens this weekend in St Louis. Great sound. Mike Sigler sounded great playing GFI. There are a lot of vids on youtube. Here is one. Sounds great to me.......

Wanted to thank those of you that took the time to respond to my request about Simmons Guitars, I did buy one, a 10 string with 3 on the floor and 4 knee levers and I could not be happier!!
It has tons on sustain, stays in tune its a very pretty tnansparent blue color and its really a "Hot" PF-3 George L pickup, so thanks again for all your answers and if you are looking for a sweet sounding, Playing guitar, try a Simmons, I guarentee you will not be disapointed, I do not know about the Genesis model never got to try one!! |
