I have an AB 47508 Type J .5 meg pot

I guess it's NOS .. I think I bought it on Ebay or here..

There is no evidence it has ever been used..

I have an inexpensive multi meter.. analog..

What should I see on the meter if the pot is good

Bo, I'm no expert. But for what it's worth... with an audio taper pot, you will see a gradual sweep on the meter as the pot is opened.

Linear, on the other hand will jump very quickly to the maximum on the meter as you gradually open the pot. These pots are not good for use in a volume pedal. Hope this helps...

Thanks JimBob.. This must be a NOS AB pot..
I changed out the Canadian PEC replacement I bought.
If I remember correctly, the PEC lasted about 30 days before it started to crackle.
I use this older MSA pedal on my home set up.

The meter will not tell you if the pot is good as the resistance does not change when they fail. The problems we have with pots is that the resistive coating wears thin and the wiper collects dirt and carbon particles, these are what cause the scratchy noise we can no longer abide by and constitute "failure" as a pedal steel VP pot.

If the pot makes noise when used and cleaning it does not fix it then it is shot. If it does not make noise when used then it is good, provided it is the correct unit for your use in the first place.
