I'm visiting Seattle through Wed, 8/16, then Bellingham thru Monday, 8/21. Anyone playing live steel guitar gigs around here? I'd love to come visit.

Please post info back here, I'll only have web access, not email.

Thanks!

Hi John-I'm up here in Bellingham, don't know of any steel shows going on in that time frame (not a lot of steel guitar live stuff in this area).

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the reply, Phil. No swinging honky tonks up here? I did discover that at the Northwest Washington Fair (wherever that is, have to research it) Merle Haggard is playing the fair tonight, and tix are only $10! I hope Norm Hamlet is with the band. That's my Plan A for now.

Anyone else gigging in or near Bellingham?

I went to college at Western Washington University, mid '90's. Lived in the 'Ham for a few years. Not much country to speak of, but I saw Roy Clark at that Fair the last year I was there.
It's not to far from Bellingham. http://www.nwwafair.com/

Tix for the Hag were sold out, so we couldn't do that. Locals say live country has virtually completely died out. A joint called Cowboys Inc. in Mt. Vernon might have a live band, but it's kinda far away.

So we might catch some Bellingham R&B at the Wild Buffalo, great saloon in town.

Oh well. As agrarian as this area is, it's a shock to find music dead here, too.

Hey Pete -

I didn't know you were another Bellinghamer! (Though I guess it dates me to say that I went there when it was still called Western Washington State College...) In fact, I was first introduced to steel guitar by hearing it floating down the Fairhaven College dorm hallway from the room of forumite Bill Bassett.

It's a shame to hear there's not much music there these days. In the early 70s there was an amazing amount of live music there for what was then a very small town.

Phil -

Is Jack Hansen still playing around there after all these years? Last I knew, he was still something of the Godfather (or, at least, the GRANDfather) of the country and bluegrass scene up there... I lost track of him a while back, though.

Chris-

I don't know Jack...may still be around. I didn't mean to imply there isn't music here...just not much/no steel guitar. Lots of modern rock, bluegrass is really popular too.

Good Morning John,
Boy oh boy, memories of Bellingham. Sorry to hear there isn't a lot going on up there any more but back in the day...I too went to Western or should I say FAIRHAVEN College back in the early 70s. I was bitten by the steel guitar bug and Chris is right, I drove everyone nuts with the whinny sound for months as I learned to play the basics. But I was very fortunate and fell in with a few really good musicians who encouraged me. One of which was Rick Dunn who played nightly at The Coconut Grove. I'd use a fake ID and sit there for hours drinking pitchers of Rainier and listening to him and Bob Britt knock out one old country classic after another. Some years later I moved back to B'ham and bought a house which became Reynardyne Audio Productions, an early Tascam type recording studio, long before digital made that kind of thing available to just about everyone. Me and my partner played at Kovac's for a long time in the grand tradition of the sit-down-gig. That's where I met the late Dean Forshee who was an early forumite but died tragicly in an airplane crash off the coast of California some years ago.
I remember Chris Bauer also, I had'nt realized I'd made such an impression until years later when we got reaquainted right here on the Forum.
Bellingham also has the distinction of being the birthplace of the career of Loretta Lynn. I think she lived out toward Lyndon and started playing the Honky Tonks in the area. In particular The Wintergarten which closed up in about 72 or 73.

Well, even if there is little to hear these days, you can at least enjoy the scenery. It's beautiful this time of year.

What a coincidence, I worked an 18 month construction project at Arco Cherry Point and lived on Donavan St. at the base of the hill going up to Western Washington University 1988 & 89. My daughter graduated from Seholm High. Great memories of was playing for a 50% Classic Rock 50% old Country band out of Ferndale.
Also played for a guy over in Anacortes.

Bill. Thanks for reminding me of Rick Dunn and Bob Britt. Both fantastic musicians and people. I'ts been a long time. As I recall Loreta Lynn live in Concrete for a while. Mooney worked at the plant.

I had a weekend sit-down gig (as a duo) out at The Semiahmoo Resort for much of the time I spent in the 'Ham.
I had to wear a tie (thanks again Jerry Gar!). Lady In Red packed the dance floor (oiy vey! ). A great gig for a returning college student, though.
I played a few solo's downtown (can't remember the name of the place now, but it was next door to the record store on the corner).
'Also windsurfed alot in B'Ham bay and up at Harrison Hot Springs (on the lake).
Skiied a ton at Mt Baker, too.
I had a good time up there!

Guys there is still quite a good country scene up north of Seattle led by a a great singer named Knut Bell, based out Skagit Valley. As a born and bred Puget Sounder (Seattle, Lopez Island, and Whidbey Island) I miss that part of the country very much sometimes ...
