I have a home computer based recording studio using Sonar.

As PC sound varies and usually has high latency it's not usually practical to play along and record on the PC at the same time with the PC's sound card.

There is a free (and very popular) recording program available "Audacity" (do a google search).

Along with a recording program, assuming your PC's sound card is a full duplex (playback and record at the same time) you will need an interface unit (basically a preamp if you run your guitar directly to the PC as the signal level directly from a guitar is not sufficient enough for PC audio inputs).

If you don't want to record, you can use a small mixer, run the PC sound to one channel on the mixer, connect your guitar to another channel on the mixer and then run the output of the mixer to the amplifier.

This is some general info. More specifics on what you have (e.g. PC and sound card) and exactly what you want to do is needed.

If you only want to play along with backup tracks for pratice with the track playing thru your amp, a PODxt works very well for this and has very good effects.

Edward,

I do the same thing at home.
As not to bother anyone, I usually play thru headphones.

I plug the computer and output of my Peavy Tubefex into the line inputs of a small, rather inexpensive, Behringer mixer. I think it was about $100 at Guitar Center. There is also a record out on the mixer which I use into my Zoom H2 for reference later. It works well.
