Hey David - Please say HI to my hometown for me!
My wife and I started our first date on the front porch of Delta of Venus. It ended, well, er.... elsewhere.
By the way, unless they've done some serious remodeling or expanding, where are they gonna put a band??? |

Nice to know this post is bringing old friends together
Hey Dave Z., I'll trade gigs I hear the new Palms is very nice (although the old tractor shed that was the original had it's charm too). Have a great gig, and if you do finish early, love to see ya again.
Chris, I know you worked with Gary Campbell, so I wanted to pass along some sad news, a couple of weeks ago they woke in the middle of the night to find their house fully ablaze, and they lost everything except his Martin guitar, which he retrieved at the cost of some 3rd degree burns. Luckily all his music stuff was not stored at his house. He and Vicki are OK, and that's what is important.... thought you'd like to know. Drop me an email if you would like a contact number for them.

Sounds like fun! I lived and played all sorts of bad music in Davis, CA for about 5 years in the 70's. Still love that town! |

My old stomping grounds as well- we played at the Antique Bazaar (the "A-B"), Ms.M's and Cassidy's as "Powder River" while going to vet school between 74-77 and had a ball! What a great town! Sniff.... |

Wow Jim, the Antique Bazaar, I haven't thought of that place since the '70s.... I don't think it's still around. I too had many a wild night there (back when it didn't hurt so much the next day ). I was in a 6 piece western swing band named Tokepela (think that is Hoppi Indian for something... forgot what)... anyway we went on to do many gigs in Berkely and the North Bay with Cody and the Wheel.... good times fur sure! In fact our drummer and fiddle player joined Ray and Asleep at the Wheel, and I moved to Montana... hmmmmmm wonder what went wrong there

Hey David, I did a gig last night with a fiddler that knows you. His name is Ron Elkman. Good fiddler!!
Have a good show tonight. I won't be making it since I have to put in a half day at work tomorrow and be ready for a 9PM downbeat in Humbolt County.
See you next time.

Hi Dave, glad you got in on that gig... Ronnie called emailed me about that gig, but I've been just jammed at work these days, and I knew I'd never make it to Rohnert Park... yeah Ron's a real good fiddle player, and a really nice guy to boot! Sounds like you and me are keeping Standard Oil in business this weekend Have a good one!

Geeeez - A veritable Davis reunion!
David - I'm sorry to hear about Gary's horrible loss. I've been out of touch with him for years but, yes, if you can forward me his contact info, I'd certainly want to wish him well.
I remember Tokepela - or, at least, hearing about you guys. Wasn't that Richard Cassonova who joined AATW along with Bill Mabry? I seem to dimly recall that he was originally from Woodland. (Which, if I recall that correctly, means that he and Chris Ivey must surely have been buddys at some point since he was from Woodland as well..)
This'll date me for sure... I remember when the Antique Bazaar was DeFazios Pizza with the ever-present Aggie Hotel hovering above. My brother and I got merciless grief because our father was the county health officer and his department shut down DeFazios and the then-venerated Fosters Freeze a number of times for health violations. (Mind you, The A-B was never much cleaner. I sure had a lot of great underage-but-still-able-to-sneak-in-to-play-music times there, though!)
I don't often think of myself as missing Davis (or, as it hilariously used to be called, "The Athens of Yolo County") too much but this thread really has brought back some great memories. Whoda thought? |

Wow, I had a really great time at this gig, the Starlings turned out to be a really tight, 4 part harmony, blugrass group, and we all played on the deck to folks sitting on the lawn and patio.... a very summer affair.
Chris, right on about Richard Casanova, and yeah we've all know Chis Ivey for years and years.

David W and David Z and Chris B,
I think there is a lot of work for steelers around here as you two guys seem to working lots and I seem to be working every night with a different band and getting gig offers at most gigs for new bands.
I think that is about half the amount of work Mr.Dave Zirbel is doing, he's a wildman!!!!
Chris, I think we could put you to work should you ever give up on this Freud thing and do what God put you on this earth.
Steel and be picky..or whatever.
Call me!!! You have my number.

Hey, how can I not add to this? I too went to school at UCD and stuck around for quite a while afterward. 'Played the Antique Bizarre in a bluegrass group called "The Orange Peel Special" in 1976. Anyone remember "The Cave" on the opposite corner? It was in the basement of The Paragon. Played there at one of my first gigs (guitar, not steel). Hope you had a great gig, Dave.

Hi Dave - I'll give you a call. We're waaaaaay behind on catching up. (As usual, I guess...)
The Cave! Another long-lost memory. I played there as well as on the Paragon patio on the street. Some blues gigs with Bill Scholer and a variety of who-knows-what-you'd-call-'em gigs with Gary Yoder, Davis' primary remaining relic of Davis' contribution to the 60s Fillmore scene (Oxford Circle, Blue Cheer, KAK, etc.)
Okay... as long as we're bringing up musical skeletons from the long darkened closet, anyone besides me play at (or even admit to frequenting) the Olive Pit? Bonus points are, of course, to be had for having grabbed grub at Murder Burger next door before the show... |

or frequent the Giant Orange outta town- or- even better-
playing the Trail's End in Woodland with the stage so small that I had to play sitting on my amp (orig. Fender Vibrasonic) by the women's bathhroom - ahh... the good old days- ducking the Kustom Columns as they were being overturned in the brawls)))... sniff.. sniff.. |
