Topic: Console Grande Serial Number-where Might It Be???? |

I've had my Gibson Console Grande since 1953 and never really looked for a serial number. The only logical place would be under the control knobs plate. Any comments on this please?

| Hello George: I would guess that your Console Grande does not have a serial number but an ink stamped "FON" which stands for "Factory Order Number". The number should contain both numbers and letters. It can be used to date the instrument. Most likely, it is stamped in one of the body routings. I have never been able to find one on my Console Grande but I don't want to take my guitar completely apart to look for it for fear of damaging the pickups or the wiring. I used the Potentiometer Date Codes to get the approximate date of my guitar. |

I have a GIBSON Console Grande 1958 and my serial number is stamped under neath on the wood. Very hard to see. When the guitar is upside down in it's case the number is over on the right side corner edge. My serial # 9 1405

I was told by GIBSON the last Console Grande's were made in 1956. They still made the Consolette a little longer
Mine was bought Dec 1956 as said the No. is stamped in the wood with the 1st number being the year in the 50's it was made. But I know that Don Helms' was stamped in the wood on the other end it was a 1949 and there was a year or two the No. was ink stamped and it came off
The bar at the bottom was added by me for stability
Bobbe Seymour said he would give me $300 for it. I'm still thinking on that deal.

| Thank you for this thread. I have a 49 or 50??? Console Grande (3 legs). Its the one that was advertised on SGF. I have gone over it with looking for a serial number to no avail. With the info on Don Helms guitar I'll go back and look somemore. Thanks Lee |

| I just purchased a Console Grande today that looks identical to the one that Richard Grant posted pictures of. Case is identical also. The serial number is 0-10520 stamped in the bottom cover on the bridge end. I was told by the owner that it is a 1960 model. It is very very clean and shows almost no wear that I can see. It is supposed to have been in the case for the last 20 years. Will post more later when I get it cleaned up and plugged up. |

There are a lot of differences between the post 1956 and pre 1956 Gibson double 8's in the pictures posted by Richard Grant and Danny Hammers. The early models had a single coil pickup with 8 magnetic pole pieces for each of the necks, and there were 3 controls, 1 volume and 2 tone (one of them treble-cut and the other treble-pass (like a bass cut)). The later model had what looks like a triple pickup on each neck- with a middle pickup with 8 poles and two 4 pole pickups for the top 4 and bottom 4 strings. And two pots (volume and tone), 3 lever switches and 2 push button switches.
So is the later version the same as the Consolette, or is that something entirely different?

Hi I'm new to the site.
I have a consolette 1950 single coil soapbars absolutely no serial no.
I repair guitars and most things with strings and my efforts with gibson failed to turn up any info. there are old cat. pictures that helped. They did put humbucker type p/ups in some from 57.
The only way I could date mine was the same method as fender stuff, if the pots are original they will have a date and batch no. from the manufacturer. Usually close to construction time of the instrument
