Every time this type of Bud comes up for sale several people say "It's the one to have". Barrels behind 2-hole pullers. What makes this system so special? How is it better than 2-hole pullers alone? _________________ SHO-BUD Professional SD-10 Black, SHO-BUD Pro III Custom D-10 Red, Goodrich Matchbox 6A, Steeler's Choice seat, Quilter Steelaire Amps. |

With the 2-hole pullers alone, the pull rods are fastened to the bell cranks. This means each pull rod can only perform one function, so the potential number of changes is limited by the number of raise and lower holes available in the changer, which in the "2-hole pullers alone" era is either double raise-single lower or double-double.
With barrels behind 2-hole pullers the pull rods are not fastened to the bell cranks. This means you can theoretically put any number of changes--raises or lowers--on a string, by putting multiple barrels on the single raise rod or lower rod, with cross shafts and bell cranks for each change (barrel), because each one acts independently of the others. This is also true of the rack-and-barrel system, but r&b is bulkier, heavier, and generally noisier.
Also, the barrels-behind-2-hole-pullers guitars are the last version of Sho-Bud to for sure have no pot metal parts. In the 2-hole-pullers-alone era they began using pot metal fingers in the changer. |

Large wood bodies, before they started using pot metal,
great sounding single coil p/u's - usually with coil tap - very smooth playing, simple bulletproof, versatile system. The one-up one-down changer is also a factor in how good they sound.
Plus, they looked really cool...tons of Sho-Mojo.
The time period in which they were made was a couple years before Sho-Bud started cutting corners, so in hindsight they sort of represent a golden era for SB.
The whole was just greater than the sum of the parts. |

Yep, John, I think that was your quote. OK, guys, after taking a closer look at the one that just sold on the forum, I do see that it's a single x single changer with "the professional" style rods, so this system is sort of in-between R&B and 2 hole puller/nylon tuner setup.
Now after reading your responses my brain wheels started really turning. It seems that you could easily utilize a hybrid of this system to augment the limitations of 2x2 or 2x1 changers and nylon tuner pull rods of later Sho-Buds. So if you've got one of those and need to add an extra raise to a string you could do it in three easy steps: get a few extra 2-hole pullers and and a few barrels, get longer pull rods, remove the allen set screw from the brass part of the pullers and voila = extra raises/ lowers as needed. Or did I miss something?
Of course, with my simple copedent I haven't needed more than 2x1, perhaps as my playing improves I'll start expanding into additional raises/lowers. Lotsa great info here. _________________ SHO-BUD Professional SD-10 Black, SHO-BUD Pro III Custom D-10 Red, Goodrich Matchbox 6A, Steeler's Choice seat, Quilter Steelaire Amps. |

I guess the simplest answer would be "That was then, this is now". |
