I've been burning CD's on this pc for 4 yrs. Two weeks ago I got this message when attempting to burn a CD: "Connect a burner and restart the player". I've tried for 2 weeks to solve this problem. I replaced the burner but the problem still exists. To date this is what I have done:

New Lite-On IHAS 524-B DVD/CD R-RW Combo meets the HCL Compatibility req’s. (I was having the same issue with a four yr old Lite-On DVD/CD R-RW Combo so I replaced the old drive and still having the same issue).
Set IMAPI CD ROM Service to Auto / Start
Ran MicroSoft Fix-it tool multiple times – No Change, Still broken
Uninstalled/Reinstalled DVD/CD R-RW drive and drivers
Rolled back to WMP 9 then up to WMP 11 again
Able to burn with Roxio Easy DVD/CD Creator (now uninstalled)
Tried System Restore but it wouldn’t restore to any date
Double checked "enable recording for this device"
Updated firmware on DVD/CD R-RW drive
WMP ll updates are installed and up to date
Edited registry “HKEY –Burning CD Drives” from 3 to 2 (Allows Optical drive to write instead of just play).

Computer-
Gigabyte motherboard GA-K8NF-9 (rev 2.2)
AMD Athlon 64 CPU +3700 - 2.21 Ghz
Ram 2.00 GB

Operating System-
Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP3

Is there anything else I can do before tossing WMP out the chassis and reinstalling something else. BTW, I did get a copy of Nero 9 with the new optical drive but haven't installed it.

Run a complete malware/spyware scan. It's a far out possibility but considering what you've done and it works with Roxio, it's something to consider.

If you don't have the free Malwarebytes program, download it, install it, let it update itself and then run a complete malware scan.

Thanks Jack, Malwarebytes did a full scan but did not detect any viruses or malware.
