What happens if I run a Stewart PA100 in the bridged mono mode (where it supposedly wants to see 8 ohms) into a 4 ohm cabinet? I've already gigged with it this way and it was borderline able to keep up and didn't blow up. Did I just get lucky? What kind of power might it be putting out?

...running your "8-ohm minimum" bridged amp into a 4-ohm load is like hooking both channels up to a 2-ohm load, certain disaster awaits....

Jeff,

Did you actually prepare the amp for Bridged Mono operation per the manual? Just pressing the button does not put it into Bridged mode.

The specs are a bit confusing, but it says it will put out 180Watts into an 8 ohm load in Bridged mode.

Yeah Rich thats the spec sheet that brought this up and yes I do have it properly wired for bridged mono. I thought that I had seen somewhere that it could be run into either a 4 OR 8 ohm load. Other sources seem to contradict this.

Jeff,
Yea, that manual lists 180 Watts for both 4 and 8 ohm loads. Confusing. The straight spec sheet only lists 8 ohms.

I'd play it safe and stay at 8 ohms. There is a chance you could blow both the amp and the speaker!

JUST TALKED TO THE STEWART PEOPLE
YOU CAN RUN THE 100B IN THE BRIDGE MODE
INTO 8 OHMS OR 4 OHMS AT 180 WATTS
THEY SAID THE THING TO WATCH FOR IS TO HAVE IT WELL VENTILATED THAT IT DOES RUN A LITTLE HOTTER
ONE OF THEIR TEST IS BRIDGE INTO 4 OHMS
IVE USED THSE BEFORE AND JOHN HUGHEY ALSO USED THEM
WE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS

I've been using 2 PA100 bridged into 4 ohms for several years.

Works fine, mounted in the floor of my speaker cabs.

Please forgive my ignorance in this subject but what is the preparation that needs to be done to the amp and where can the instructions be found?

Excellent. Thanks Rich. That is a huge help. Now I just need to properly size or spec out a speaker for it. I it true that a speaker rated for 60 watts @ 8 ohms would be more than enough? Or should get one equal or greater than the amps power spec? Thanks again.

Lonnie,

I would recommend a speaker rated for at least the 100watts the amp is putting out. More would be better!
