| Hey how does a 18K single coil (vintage sho-bud) sound compared to a humbucker 18K (like a George L). Just interested on anyones thoughts. John T. |

| seems like im getting more sustain and smoother tone from the humbucker, not that its better than the single pole but different and a little more modern. |

I believe many will offer the comments that the single coil has a quite a bit more edge than the HBucker and I would also agree, but, for me and many , the simple facts are noise related, I prefer to not combat any room or noise issues so its' HBuckers for me on the Steel. I personally feel I am gaining more than I am giving away.

I use single coils with NO hum issues. I enjoy better string seperation and a crisp tone. Infact, on stage I set my twin on my right side right under my pickup. My twin stays on "10" all night, as I control my volume with my volume pedal. One of our gigs I'm against the wall with a neon sign right above me. No hummmmmmmm. Now making sure of a couple of things--such as grounding your pickup properly and the AGE of your pickup, will certainly weigh in on the matter.
Now, old shobud pickups are an interesting story, as the older they get, the more age compromises them to more and more microphonic-ness(is that a word??  ). So I have Harry Jackson or Jerry Wallace rewind my pickups.
If you want a humbucker in a Shobud, Lloyd Green did really well with a BL 710. Personally, the George L doesn't do much for me in an old 'bud. They are great in other guitars, though. Each guitar has it's voice.

| I've heard Teles, etc. that hummed and buzzed like crasy. But my stock Emmons single coils have never made any weird noises, in any playing situation. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I haven't found any reason to mess with the PUPs in my PSG. |
