Topic: can a bar be re-powder coated? |

I have a black bar purchased from Chuck Brittain years ago. It has a few spots worn thru to the steel. Can it be recoated? If so, would I search for places that do powder coating? It may not be cost effective.

I would expect that to be the case, Ron. Unless you know somebody. The place I used to use for plating small jobs, also did powder coating. They were great! Then they instituted a minimum. But you might luck out, and find someone who's friendly. Probably have to remove all the old coating first. |

Hi Ron,
It's hard to believe that Chuck would have used black powder coating on a bar. After all, that's usually only black nylon or black polyester. A few trips across the strings would have scratched it. I would expect it to be a black chemical coating on the bar, like the color on a firearm.
It could also have been black chrome or nickel plating. Next time I am up that way, I'd be happy to take a look at it. I know the right guys in NJ to do the refinishing, but it might not be cost effective.

It could also be black enamel. That process is done by fusing a thin coating of black glass powder onto the metal bar. That would look like the finish on one of the roasting pans your mother used to use.
Since the coating is only glass, it's not very hard. It could have worn off.

| I checked with Chuck and he said the coating needs to be sanded off first. That could be a dusty job. I'm thinking to just buy a new one. |
