HP pavilion ze4805us laptop, can you use a 1024 memory chip,leaving the other socket empty?

No. You cannot replace the existing 256 MB module with one 1 GB module. You must use no larger than 512 MB per slot. So, if you want to have 1 GB, you'll need to order two 512 MB modules.

No, my source has a higher price today (prices for RAM fluctuate often, as it is a publicly traded commodity).
Make certain that whomever you order it from offers a money back guarantee, should it fail to be recognized, or free replacement, should it fail after prolonged use. Crucial offers a limited lifetime replacement warranty on new RAM modules.
I mentioned this because a few years ago, when I first built my Windows XP computer, I bought some bargain RAM as part of the package. The RAM worked great for exactly 2 years. Then, I began suffering from random reboots and BSODs. That's when I ran MemTest on it and found all kinds of errors in one module. Foolishly, I replaced the bad module, with Kingston RAM. 6 months later, the second bargain module began to fail, after the PC was on for a few hours.
The bargain RAM I had installed was warranted for 6 months. When the second chip failed, I replaced both the old and Kingston RAM with a matched pair from Crucial. That was in the Winter of 2007. That PC is still humming along tonight. It does not suffer from reboots or BSODs and there are no more RAM errors.
It cost me a lot more to buy Crucial RAM than Kingston or the bargain RAM that failed. But, I got what I paid for in durability. RAM is greatly affected by heat buildup and laptops are famous for just that.
Just my opinion...

Be careful with the Kingston memory, especially if it's the Kingston "Value RAM". We see a lot of incompatibility problems with Kingston Value RAM (KVR) on the Dell site.
Crucial is a safer buy, even though it may cost more. Crucial is guaranteed to work in your PC. |

I will do a search on crucial it was not that much more than Kingston if I remember correctly.

That was the brand I was referring to! I forgot that it was made by Kingston.
I now think of it as "Valueless RAM"

What's really interesting about RAM pricing is that the older lower capacity types sell for much more than higher capacity new types. This has to do with the quantity being sold, hence manufactured.
