Does anyone know a link that will list the top ten tunes in country music for 1961? I have looked at Billbord charts but cannot get to a link for finding what I am needing. Thanks Fred

Fred
Do a search engine for top songs in history of the year you are specifying...I did this once for a friend who owned a '57 chevy and we found all types of stuff..(top movies, songs, tv shows, etc..)

There were 8 songs that made it to number one that year.

"North to Alaska" - Johnny Horton stayed at number 1 for 5 weeks
"Don't Worry" - Marty Robbins #1 for 10 weeks
"Hello Walls" - Faron Young #1 for 9 weeks
"Heartbreak U.S.A." - Kitty Wells 4 at #1
"I Fall to Pieces" - Patsy Cline 2 weeks at #1
"Tender Years" - George Jones 7 weeks at #1
"Walk on By" - Leroy Van Dyke 19 weeks at #1 (I think it still holds the record for most weeks at number one)
"Big Bad John" - Jimmy Dean 2 weeks at number 1

I'm pretty sure Alvin's list is culled from several different charts. Were it otherwise,1961 at 58 weeks long would have been an even more remarkable year than it was Shocked .Great tunes,Alvin! And thanks.

Uh oh...my wife is right. I AM getting old. I can look at the title of ANY of these songs and hear it in my head, intro and all. Yet....I don't think I could tell you the name of ONE top ten song over the last few years, and would not know a recent "topper" if I heard it....time marches on..and on..etc.

North To Alaska was at number 1 for the end of 1960 and Walk On By went back and forth to number one till March of 1962. That's where the extra 6 weeks come from, but it was still a remarkable year in that I was born one of the weeks that "Walk On By" was the number one song in the country (even on the top pop charts that week).

"Walk On By"....Loved that tune.I'd gotten a brand-new Ampeg Reverberocket in June of '61,and had more fun than was legal with the signature lick-tremolo dimed and the reverb way up.I'm on the left in this pic from December '61.It was a great year and I wish it HAD been 58 weeks long!

Floyd Cramer [Last Date]

The funny thing about that song is that it went to #2 in the Hot 100 (Pop). "Are You Lonesome Tonight" kept it from being #1. And guess who played piano on "Tonight"?
