gentlemen,
Someone on ebay is selling a black s-10 BMI
with 5 floors and no knee levers. Unless the guys a midget why wouldn't he want the knees? I't looks like its got about 13 changes. Anybody ever here about something like this on a professional steel guitar. I'd be interested in someones opinion.

Could it have been a C6th guitar early on in it's life?

He says it's tuned to E9th, but these look like C6th changes to me:

hi bob,
he says he doesn't play, however it could be pretty expensive to change it around and add the four knee levers. Maybe get rid of the fifth pedal.
It'd get pretty crowded under there. Have to think about all that work. I do like the color black, but i dont feel comfortable with the auctions.

He shouldn't have put E9th strings on it. This is a C6th pedal steel.

It's easy enough to change what the pedals do on this model. Adding knee levers would be some work and expense, though. This is pretty far from being a standard E9th guitar.

Good advice above, but, remember that knee levers didn't appear unitl the early 70's. There are a lot of old ShoBuds, Fenders, MSAs and such without knee levers. I, of ocurse, can't live without 'em.

I'm thinking maybe some older guy, used to playing without the knees ordered it like that from BMI. I'll bet you dan burnham would know. I got high bid on it, although i dont expect to get it. WHOOPS , I dont know if i was to say that on the forum.

Typical E9th gauges
.012 .015 .011 .014 .018 .022 .026 .030 .034 .038

Typical C6th gauges
.015 .014 .018 .022 .026 .030 .036 .042 .054 .068

More than a little heavier - they are totally different. It's like putting a set of banjo strings on a guitar.

hi bob,
your right about the c6 tuning on this steel. I'm wondering how you would work the pedals. Would you do everything with your left foot or bring the right foot off the volume pedal to help out? perhaps you push down two pedals at once like the e9 tuning.
these questions might sound stupid, but in the pictures on the changer finger end I cant quit make out how hes got it set up.

Looking at the pull rods, it looks like it is a C6th guitar with the following tuning:

Tab:

     1     2     3     4     5
G          G#
E                F
C                      D
A    B                 B
G          F#
E                D#
C                            C#
A    B
F          F#                E
C          D                 A

Pretty standard C6th tuning but with the C to B knee lever missing on the 3rd string.

It is common to use your left foot to activate 2 adjacent pedals, the same as on E9th. Common are P1 & P2, P2 & p3, P3 & P4, P4 & P5, and maybe 2 feet on P1 & P5 to get an A9 chord (but you can also get the note - B - on the 4th string with pedal 4). If you want to set it up as a C6th guitar, you would want to add the knee lever mentioned above as a minimum. With no levers, I would move everything to the left by 1 pedal, get rid of the changes on P1, and put the 3rd string C - B on P5. You could then play P5 with your right foot and get the combinations with most the other pedals.

To set it up as an E9th would require quite a bit of work. You will want between 3 and 5 knee levers and that will require a lot of parts and mechanical smarts to get them placed right.

If the price was right, it might be worth it to buy and have one of the many guitar techs on here modify the undercarriage, and/or add the levers.

BMI is a fine guitar.

Lee, there's a good looking black BMI single 10 E9 that just showed up on ebay. This one has three floor pedals, three knee levers. It looks to be in good shape. The case shows little wear, so it probably was a bedroom guitar. So far, it is pretty inexpensive. These are good, solid pro level instruments. I played one for a couple of years but the one I had was so road worn I moved on. If you are just learning, three levers will take you a long ways...

Richard' thank you so much for that information. I will definately jot that down. OF course your right, what you say about the two pedals together is the most logical thing to get those chord changes. Larry, I've seen that black BMI your talking about. I bought an s-10 BMI used, about a year ago.I had to get some parts from BMI just to get it back to emmons e9. Anyhow I sold it to a guy whos playing in my band. however I may do something stupid like buying them both, If they dont go to high. BMI,s in general, are kinda heavy and some guys dont like that. Might work in my favor though. thanks again for the input guys.
