Topic: What is a good pod effects unit for steel? |

I'm wanting to get into the 21st century & start replacing my rack mount stuff with some of the new tech that is out and is wayyy smaller and hopefully improved tones...however I need some suggestions from some fellow steel players that may have already made this change. Can some of you help me out on what the options are? Thanks!

Start with the tones on Jack Stoner's site and go from there. Nearly all of the tones included in the unit are so overdone they are almost useless for steel. I just got my xt from a forum member a few weeks ago, and I'm still on the same learning curve as you. Be sure to read the other POD posts on the forum.

Pod XT, X3 or the new HD are the desireable "Bean" models for Steel.
I don't use the amplifer or speaker modeling, just use mine for effects only. As previously mentioned I have some of my effects only "Tones" (Programs) on my web site that can be downloaded to a PC and then loaded into a POD using the free Line 6 "Gearbox" program.
I do have a preamp Tone I use when I record direct using the POD XT.

Jack, thanks for the info. I plan to go online & order one right now! Where can I get one of those nifty POD holders that clamps onto one of the steel legs?

I use the Plexi 100 amp model with the four 10" speaker simulator. The Tweed B man amp model is also very good.
I think the four 10" speaker simulation sounds better than the two 12". four 12" and one 15" simulations, regardless of amp model.

I've got a pod X3 and need help 
I've downloaded Jack's settings, but can't open them on my computer.
There are so many parameters on the X3 that I find it impossible to fathom, has anyone got some good steel tones that they could share, literally by telling me every single parameter of the setting? |

Richard, The best thing to do is call Line 6 tech support and have them walk you through the process over the phone. Line 6 has excellent tech support and they will stay on the phone with you till everything's working the way you want, no matter how long it takes.
However plan on spending an hour or more on the phone, much of that on hold while the tech support guys are helping the previous callers. The last time I called, I had to wait around 20 minutes, but once I got the guy he spent about 10 minutes helping me.
I actually have to call them some time next week myself, and I will ask if they have a phone number for tech support in your country.

One option is a Digitech Rp155. They have Lexicon reverbs, analog and tape delay modes and lots of stuff to play with. They do have a learning curve but members on the forum have presets to share.

Thank you very much everyone for your help! I just bought a "Like new" POD XT for $152.00 including shipping. Hope thats a good deal. I also tried to call Tommy Dodd's ph# he has listed but got a TV station instead. I would really like to get one of those clamp on the leg POD holders. I sent him a PM. Hopefully he'll check his forum messages sometime soon.

| Thanks for all the kind words about my POD brackets. I've been manufacturing them for several years now and have well over one hundred in service. The good thing about the new POD HD Desktop ("kidney-bean shape) is they have continued using the metal housing they've used since the beginning with the original POD. Any of the 5 generation PODs (POD, POD 2.0, POD XT, POD X3, or POD HD) will work with my bracket. Wow! After using my old ProfexII for all these years, I just got an XT and mounted it on the POD holder that Tommy sells and lovin it! For you guys that are discouraged with your XT, listen to Jack on this thread! I simply downloaded the Line 6 "Gearbox" onto mine, then downloaded Jacks PSG settings and "Presto"! Killer PSG sounds! Only negative I can see so far is I can't download tracks onto it for playback when practicing...but the newer HD model doesn't do that either. The justification is just not there for me to spend more $$ to get the newest POD until they add the playback feature. Maybe they're saving that feature to increase sales for the next generation POD.

If you use gearbox, you can edit all of Jack's presets to include all the different amp and cabinet simulators.
I have all of Jack's and Tommy Dodd's presets as well as one for the compressor by Rick Schmidt. I used to have 10 different amp models each with four 10 inch speakers, two 12's, four 12's and a 15. After trying them all, I eliminated most of those settings and narrowed them down to the Plexi 100, B-man tweed, Roland jazz Choprus, and twin, amp heads, each with the four 10 speaker emulations. I still haven't decided which of those I like the most.
Next, I'm going to try all the different presets with each of the 4 amp/speaker patches. Eventually I'll narrow it down to a single signature sound, or maybe a couple of different ones.
The possibilities are endless.

Paul, you may know this already, but you if you use a computer for your practice tracks, you can hook up your POD via USB and the track will play through your guitar amp. I use this setup all the time for solo gigs or when i don't have a bass player.
I agree with Mike, the POD is the swiss army knife of effects processors.

When I had the XT, the 2X12 cabinet settings just seemed to sound muddy to me, so I also used the 4X10 cabinets.
With the new HD though, the 2X12 cabinets all sound great. Big improvement! Since the HD now includes the Vibrato channel on the
Fender Twin & Deluxe models, they're even more accurate.

I just got a pod xt that is a vers 1..and it seems that it can't be recognized on my computer with win7.
What is the deal? do I have to connect with a midi adapted to a usb in order to connect and down load Jacks programs.

Ken, if you haven't already, you will need to go to line6 website and download line6 monkey and Line6 Edit programs. If there are newer versions of firmware avaiable for your POD, the monkey program will update the firmware in your POD. If you have the proper drivers(monkey will install the drivers)all you need is a usb cable and line6 edit program.

Dennis, thanks for the tip about running tracks via USB! I'll try that. Ken, just like Dennis said, just download onto your PC the L6 Monkey & Gearbox and you'll find out
it'll workout for you great. Also, I just found 19 of the latest & greatest EQ settings for PSG on the L6 website & downloaded them. They include the settings from alot of the pros such as John Hughey & others. Between these 19 settings I'm confident you'll find a few of them you'll fall in love with.

Those settings are not submitted by the pros. They're some other guy's idea of what that particular pro steeler sounds like. Slight difference.
Click on the "Tone Name" then look at the author. |

I never understood why all the fuss about wanting someone elses presets. Why not make your own? It is very easy to do and that way, it is to your preference exactly. Besides that, using someone elses preset will not make you play or sound like them.
I guess it's ok to take someones preset and start there. But why not tweak it to your exact liking? The Pods are among the easiest to set anyway!

I agree 100%! On the new POD HD I just started from scratch on each of my presets.
The screen displays a signal chain, so it's alot easier to add things as you go along and place them in whatever order you want.
Then you can tweek each one as well. |
