You haven't lived until you have played a gig in central Texas outside and the temperature at 7 oclock is 100 degrees when you start..your fingers are limber and head is swimming and and and and and you can't think of anything except to say to yourself, "what the ...was I thinking?"

No different here in Florida. We've done several jobs at Silver Springs Park (Ocala). The front of the stage pavillion faces south. Try playing a noon time start concert with the sun beating down directly on you.

With the front (stage) facing south, it's great for the outdoor audience but hell for the performers and instruments.

Yep! Having a little river of salty sweat roll into your eye just as you start a ride on a song is so much fun. You squeeze that eye shut, and then you look like Popeye playing the steel guitar!

it gets up over 100 here in sacramento regularly. if you're outside the bar itself can get too hot to touch. and you try to have as little contact as possible with the steel guitar and strings.

I played an outdoor gig last night in Katy, on the deck outside of a bbq joint. We started at 5:30 - the sun was directly in our face for two hours, but we did get a few random minutes of relief whenever a couple of big clouds came by and blocked the sun.

Toasty warm indeed !! Only the drummer had any shade at all, from a pop-up tent that didn't come anywhere near to covering the stage..

There was a slight breeze which helped a little, but I found it impossible to keep the guitar in tune.

Anyways, it was not even a little bit fun until the sun went down, and by then I was completely soaked from sweat and very likely delirious from the heat.

That's my 3rd outdoor gig this summer, also my last!

Did one in Greenville Texas July 4th. Somehow the little bit of wind that was blowing got word we were starting and quit blowing. The saving grace was that it only lasted 2 hrs. It was one of those gigs where there was a band before and after us so we had to set up and down quickly. My biggest problem was keeping my picks on and keeping the sweat off the strings. The Zum Hybid stayed in tune very well.

Several companies make small, portable canopies. Here's one at Wal-Mart for less than $20-->Click Here

I wonder if one of these could be strategically located so as to put you in the shade.

Try Gulfport Mississippi on the 4th of July on the bed of a 40 foot lo boy trailer with the temperature at 98 degrees, humidity the same, and no wind with a hell of a hangover. I quit drinking after that one.

I forgot to mention, that's what happens in the room where our band rehearses. It's really hot outside. Laughing

Add a nice dusty rodeo arena to that 100, and then you know it's all about the glamour of show biz. I'll take it over freezing, though.

Phred, I know about "Guffport". I started playing in a band in 1959 while at Keesler AFB. I remember several "warm" nights including one July gig in Bay St Louis, about half way between Gulfport and New Orleans.
