I saw Faron with Doug Jernigan when Doug was just a kid. It was at a new country music park that had just opened and ended up closing within a year. It was muddy, raining and the place was a dump. Faron was stone cold drunk. He sang extended versions of many of his hits and let Doug play extended breaks. Faron was just totally awesome if not obnoxious. With his voice, charisma, ego and hot steel picker and often 2 to 3 fiddles, his show buried anything that George Jones could ever hope to touch in a live show. I should mention that there was a total of less than 20 people in the audience and Faron did the show for free. Faron played a few clubs in PA, those type of clubs where it was a fill in job between major gigs, and he had twin fiddles at most of those gigs. We sat at a table maybe 15' from the band. What a show and what a sound. You've never heard Faron at his best unless you've heard him in person. Unbelievable talent!

I don't know if this song ever crossed over to the U.S.
It was the first time I heard his name... I checked him out after hearing it.

Hey Cal,
Mighty fine classic country and the "Sheriff's" voice and style will never be matched; The Good, Bad or Ugly! ha Just curious, but were you pickin' with Faron in the Summer or Fall of '77? I was stationed with the good old Air Force in Alexandria, La at the time and Faron did a show at Cajun Country down in Marksville, La. It was just a good, old fashtioned, Cajun honky tonk but it was an excellent show. Thanks, Carl |

Cal I know Faron must have drove you crazy at times. But what a talent. It made no commercial sense to release in you face steel led shuffles from the mid 70s on. But he did and didnt we just love it. |
