If you are using a stainless steel bar on stainless steel strings, the gray residue is either coming off the strings or the bar. It is caused by the friction of the bar against the strings.
Didn't you notice the drag? |

It was also my thought that the strings were likely stainless steel wound. I have always used a stainless un-chromed bar and nickel-wound strings, and haven't had any residue issue. |

I have a "bullet bar" which is stainless steel. I have no problems with it and the George L's strings which are SS wound. |
