Just had a short online discussion with a forum friend via PM... He feels that if I add 4 levers to an original Fender cable steel, I will devalue it... I told him that I personally think it adds value, as more "modern" players will find it desirable..
IMHO, if adding levers devalues a Fender, it also devalues an original old Bud 6139[ 6 pedals no knees], certain old Emmons D-10 Push Pulls [no knees] etc...
When I stupidly sold my last Fender 800 [6 and 3], I had guys desperate to buy it at current Fender 800 market price, old 60's era wooden knee levers notwithstanding.
I agree that changes shouldn't be made to vintage guitars and amps, but that anything that sharply enhances the playability of an old pedal steel won't devalue it, unless we are discussing a Bigsby which would be an exception... thoughts? bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Very few old pedal steels have any collectors value. Fender 400/800 models aren't among them. You're not going to hurt its value by adding knee levers. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Agreed, most of us steel players aren't collectors..
The " originality police" can't lay a finger on us... If most guys on this forum were in the market for an old Fender 400 cable job lets say, and two in similar condition were available at the same price, one all original with pedals only, and one with 4 well done knee levers and the usual number of pedals, lets say 4... GUESS which one would sell quicker... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

The key is functionality. A D-45 Martin or a 1954 Stratocaster are complete and functional as a modern comparably-equipped guitar, plus they have the mojo of age and originality.
A pedal steel without knee levers is, in most cases, not as functional as a steel so equipped, and since most steelers are players primarily and collectors only as a sidebar, the addition of period-correct knee levers is seen as an improvement, rather than a detriment.
Except to the few to whom purity is not only the paramount issue, it is also exclusionary. I ignore those types and leave them to their own little club. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |
