excellent album, nice use of the PSG as a "soundscape" enhancer. I'm also impressed to hear that Justin Vernon reached out to Leisz to help with song writing. _________________ Lamar S-10, Goodrich L10K VP, Carvin Vintage 16 all-tube amp, John Pearse Cryogenic steel tone bar, John Pearse strings. |

I think I've seen Bon Iver's name somewhere, but didn't know his music.
Very nice sounding samples - might have to pick up the CD.
Thanks for the tip, Bryan.
So many fascinating people and bands using steel these days. OR, THE WHALE, THE MAY DAY ORCHESTRA..... what a time to be playing steel guitar! _________________ 1979 MSA U12 Pedal Steel

Bon Iver is the name of the musical project and now the band. The singer/songwriter/artist is Justin Vernon.
I haven't heard Greg's steel in any of the clips so far. The CD is just out today. There are a lot of instruments. They performed on Colbert last night and there was no pedal steel on stage that I could see. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

There seems to be more experimenting with sound these days than anytime since... well, I don't want to sound like a (hippie) dinosaur. I was listening to MGMT and while the lyric themes are the tried and true, the sounds were really fun. |

David, you may be quite right about sound per se, and not just music with steel.
However, I think much good comes of that.
For instance, it seems that some of Greg's work is far less about licks n chops than it is about his sounds enhancing a song. I love what Chas Smith does on record; seems he takes plenty of time deciding on how something should sound, then places it in a composition.
So, as I've alluded to elsewhere, just noodling or playing while daydreaming doesn't necessarily produce music worth listening to, but judiciously using sounds - of a steel or whatever - can be very worthwhile. It just isn't the same as a song with more activity. _________________ 1979 MSA U12 Pedal Steel

Pete Drake was good at this. He's on many recordings where you would not believe a certain 'sound' was a steel guitar. |

It's audible on Beth/Rest and Towers. (I haven't heard the other songs yet.) _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

Very cool stuff. Nice to see how he's making steel fit into those songs. |
