Here's another cool use of the 1st string raise as played at 1:45 into Gene Watson and Rhonda Vincent's new album (Your Money and My Good Looks) song also entitled "Your Sweet Love Ain't Around". Note the chord progression is from B to E to D so the last part of this riff is at the 3rd fret! 1st time through is normal speed, 2nd time is slower, 3rd time uses a slide into the 4th fret.

Paddy,
The tab got lost somewhere. I will re-write it this weekend. I had a lot of trouble figuring this one out till I figured in the key drop to D. What a great sound this is on the original recording!

Greg, unfortunately, I lower my E's on RKL and raise string 1 and 2 on RKL making this lick impossible for me with raising string 1.
I used to raise 1 and 2 on LKR and I am seriously thinking about going back to this set-up as I realized that there are so many pretty sounding licks you can pull off this way.
Of course its a trade off of licks you can't do this way as well but I find it more useful the way you have it set-up for me any ways.
Is the sound file still up and running? The link doesnt seem to be working. |

I have my RKL of the E's, but I have the LKR raising my 1st and 7th string. Might want to check that out too. I don't have a problem with this kind of a lick. Hey Jim, that setup will allow you to do this lick. I raise string 1,2 and 7 on my RKR so I it wont allow me to lower my E's and raise string 1 and 2 at the same time. I am seriously thinking about going back to this setup I got used to it.

Quetin, sure it will, Greg isn't raising the 1st string and 8th. Come off your D lever to your right and bring your 1st string up. It's just a quick move. If I understand your setup. _________________ Zum U-12, Carter SDU-12, Zum Encore, Emmons S-10, Emmons D-10, Nashville 400, Two Peavey Nashville 112, Boss Katana 100, Ibanez DD700, Almost every Lesson Jeff Newman sold. I part I do understand. My MSA has the E's lowered on RKL, and on my Zum, they are lowered on the LKR. Keeps my mind working with which one I'm playing. Been going to try the Day setup, but haven't yet. _________________ Zum U-12, Carter SDU-12, Zum Encore, Emmons S-10, Emmons D-10, Nashville 400, Two Peavey Nashville 112, Boss Katana 100, Ibanez DD700, Almost every Lesson Jeff Newman sold. There are licks I used toto do with my E's dropped and using my LKR to raise string 1,2 at the same time. That was my point Jim.
That would mess me up with D lever being on different Knees! |

Thats a sweet lick! I also lower 6 with the 1 raise on RKL, so unfortunately the only way I can do the end is a tricky workaround at fret 8. Strings 10, 8 and 6 with the vertical lowering 10. Release 6 lowered with RKL then string 2. Its way more awkward using the vertical by itself and it just doesn't sound the same. |

Yes there are trade offs to every setup, it sounds so nice if you can lower youre E's and let the chord sustain while raising string one. There are also a world of licks to do with lowering E's and lowering the 2nd at the same time. Often times I thought it would be cool to lower E's on lkr so that you have both 1st raise and 2nd lower on the other knee to do what ever you want.
Trade offs no matter which way you og. Could you imagine if they ever came out with a lever system that allows any combination of any standard lever pull. Wouldnt that be something! |

How many of us have sat at our guitars for hours just trying every combination of strings and pedals/levers? It's even more complicated if you throw in bar slants, split tuning and half pedal moves. Then there' s string pulls behind the bar, open string combos and I'm sure I've missed a few other variables. You can also greatly de-tune the low B string to a low E and get some great drone sounds and low chords ( similar to the riff in Set Em Up Joe) |
