Honolulu is where you'll see the locals play their steels; Duke's, Halekulani(House without a Key)The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, "Honey's at Ko'olau" , Waikiki Beach Marriott,Polynesian Cultural Center, and the Outrigge Hotel. Somtimes at Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville, Sometimes at The Sheraton, Royal Hawaiian some of the resorts on Kalakaua street, Kalia St.. Not to much goin on with the steel on Maui,although there is Slack Key guitar here and there. There is a place in Napili that showcases slack key guitar. When you get there pick up a publication called "THis week in Maui" it will tell you what's goin on. You might find a steel at the "Feast at Le'Le"(Lahaina)a luau. Also check out "This week in Oahu" you'll see these publications everywhere! Be sure and checkout the North Shore(Country)too! Wiki wiki wacky Waikiki is also quite interesting. Sometimes there is a trio with a steel welcoming visitors at the airport!

You should get in touch with Alan Akaka in advance of your trip. Alan is an excellent Hawaiian steel guitarist. He was a friend and student of the great Jerry Byrd.
He's a great guy, I'm sure he'll steer you in the right direction(s), and if you get to hear him play, you'll be glad.
