This is just a beautiful piece of steel work and sure would appreciate the tab of the break if someone's worked through it; one of bands I'm playing with is doing this and although I'm playing through the break well enough, I sure would like to get closer to the original on Womack's track.

Hello All,

Here's a quick sketch of the ride. Sounds like PF to me and he has his E lower on RKL and raise on LKL. E's on the same leg can't play this without the transition from lower to raise sounding as separate notes. Great ride...joe

Thanks alot Joe!! Very Happy Very Happy

btw - to you guys who have the E's on the same knee like me....I got around the smoothness problem of the e-f lever by substituting a slide on string 5 with a pedal & string 2 on fret 6 to strings 5&2 with no pedals at fret 8. It makes the next part a little tougher but it adds some of the smoothness back on the part that required e-f knee

Joe,

Thanks for the tab post - I do have the raises and lowers on opposite knees, and that's a nice little transition. I see you mentioned giving a Skype lesson - can you tell me how that works? Thanks.

Michael,

Its pretty simple to take an online lesson using Skype.com. You go and download the free software, plug in your webcam, check your settings and dial someone up.

We can both see each other and I can switch to any of 10 shots if I turn on all the cameras. The whole time you are taking the lesson my mac is recording the video with both of us side-by-side. The video is then sent to you using skype, computer to computer. You then need to open it with QuickTime Player (free at apple.com) and watch the lesson you just took.

I can also show you picture on picture, and shots of my screen. For instance, if I want to show you how to study a scale chart, I can show it to you on my screen and you can see my mouse move over the patterns, etc.

I do 30 minute and 60 minute lessons on a regular basis and its as easy as going to pedalsteel.com and signing up. If you're not sure go to the For Sale section here on the forum and for a $10.00 donation to the SGF you can get a FREE 20 minute lesson over skype with me. Give it a dry run so to speak.

After I get your info I send an email and we set up a time. I give them to people in Australia, Germany, Brooklyn, Texas, Iowa and more... I can really dig in to the mechanics of what has to take place to be a better steel player.

Take a chance and never have to leave home again to take a lesson...thanks for asking...later...joe

Thanks to Joe and Dick for helping this man out.....Kenny Martin sent a PM asking if I would check this out for accuracy since he has a gig coming up where he wants to be right on the mark......Here's the solo at 146

Now I'll listen and watch the tab....Hope this experiment works.........Paul

Kenny,

Joe has the melody right but he used different positions that have a different sound value to accomplish the melody........I'll verbally give you the corrections according to the way I played it and you can tab it out in the way you prefer.

On line one the tab is right through the 10th fret.....then eliminate his 11th, 13th, 15th and 17th fret tab.

Instead switch strings and move back to the 8th fret on strings 3 and 5 (no Pedals) and slide them up to the 10th fret...then while they are ringing press A and B pedals down...Now move up to the 13th fret, lower the E's, and strike strings 3 and 4 ...now release the lever slowly while those strings are ringing....now you can follow Joe's tab to the second line........

On the second line the tab is correct through where it first switches to strings 5 and 6 with A&B pedals at the fifteenth fret.....Then it should read slightly different.......restrike strings 5 and 6 (no pedals) after they are ringing squeeze the A pedal and then release it and pick strings 5 and 6 again for that melody section......Now the tab is correct starting with the string grouping 3 5 and 9 for the remainder of that line..........

On line three eliminate the first 13th and 10th fret tab move......The first two moves of that line were played at the 11th fret, strings 5 and 6, A & B pedals down sliding from Joe's second line 12th fret into this 11th fret position....now lower the E's keeping A & B pedals down and strike the 4th string (This position allows all three strings to sustain)......Now follow the tab until it switches to strings 6, 7 and 9......The strings are correct but no pedal was used for the bending sound.....Instead of the tabbed pedal and fret........ at the 11th fret pick strings 6, 7, and 9 and then slide to the 10th fret for a pedal like sound......A Jerry Byrd(ism)...........Now eliminate the last three moves of the line....Instead move to the 8th fret switch to strings 4 and 6 no pedals and slide to the 3rd fret...while you are sliding to the 3rd fret ...press B pedal and lower the E's so that by the time you reach the 3rd fret they will be fully activated.....now pick without any pedals or levers, strings 4, 5, and 6..........

Good luck with your gig........Paul

First, thx Joe for posting the tab!

Second,
Thx Paul for taking the time to explain how you played it!
I want it as close, note wise, as it was played!
I could never duplicate the emotion in the way you played it but i will try!

I will be playing this tonight so i will be working on it the rest of the day and probably many days down the road. It will be in the regular show i will be doing!

Again, thank you Paul and thx for letting me hi-jack the post a little!
kenny
All the best......kenny
