I'd put your Bb in the string 7 position, even if it's the light string tuned in the higher octave. The only disadvantage of having it tuned higher is that you don't get to retune to your A6 tuning. _________________ John Allison

John, thanks for your response. What would your reasoning be for that change? |

I like the Bb in the string 7 position also as it gives you a straight 4 string dom 7 chord.
Plus the Bb on the bottom next to the C gives the whole-tone interval that Mike Neer has written about extensively....in addition to the whole-tone interval in the middle with the G and A.
The Bb where you have it breaks up the straight minor chord on strings 3-2-1. Not a deal breaker but something to thing about.
John's suggestion of even putting an octave higher Bb at string 7 is good too and merits thought.
I personally like the Low Bb there. |

Stephen, Are we using two different string numberings here? If not your reply confuses me. |

OK. I see. The 7 position is on the bottom. So John was saying that I could go with the lighter Bb string on the bottom. I kind of like that suggestion. Good tips! |

Wouldn't that tuning be a C13? |

I used to have an 8 string lap steel that I tuned to C6 with a B for the first (highest) string. Made easy access to a very pretty M7 chord and gave some nice string pulls. And it stayed out of the way of the straight C6 stuff. Some guys like to put a D up above the high E string for similar purposes. _________________ Primitive Utility Steel |

Yes, the addition of the Bb (7th) note would make it a C13. By tuning it re-entrant style with the tone in the higher register rather than a whole step below the low C note, the Dom7 chord voicings and scales are more prominent and may have some appeal in that way.
As I mentioned, the only disadvantage there is that you miss out on the opportunity to retune (lower) Bb to A for the full A6 tuning.
Depending on how far along the learning curve you are, I'd avoid re-entrant strings just to keep the grips and scales fairly standard.
That low Bb in an 8-string C6 tuning (Junior Brown 13th) is a pretty standard tuning and works nicely for a lot of styles. _________________ John Allison

If I had only 7-strings to work with, I would have my very favorite tuning of all on that Dude! C-Diatonic Tuning:
1. E___E__E__E_____E______
2. C______C__C__C_________
3. B___B___________B__B__B
4. A______A__A__A__A_____A
5. G___G__G________G__G__G
6. F____________F__F__F___
7. E___E__E__E___________E
--------------------------
Chords:Em-C6-Am-F-G13-G7-C6+M7 and a lot more, all in one position! “Get to know vot goot iss”! Otherwise, I'd tune it C6/A7:
E
C
A
G
E
C#
