I got back from the Big Island about a week ago and got to see a couple of good bands at the Waikaloa Beach Club. One night we got to see the "Hawaiians Unlimited Band" of which the singer was a member of Don Ho's group for a short period of time. They did a really good version of "I'll remember you" by Kui Lee. another night we saw Iaukea Bright do a couple of sets. He was really good, did a couple songs by Kui Lee also! Iaukea sang mostly classic "Hawaiian" songs. You might remember him from the Makapuu Black Sand Band. He also plays steel.
One day I walked into the "Music Exchange" in Waimea(Kamuela)and asked if anyone knew where there was a steel player in a band playing locally. They said yeah up in Honoka'a town that evening. One of my favorite towns by the way!

You might have been VERY lucky to catch Iaukea, Dana, as I don't think he plays out much. Try ask him about it if you see him again, he's one to catch, I like his style.

Aloha Ron,Iaukea was very good, has a good strong voice, kept the guitar pretty simple, a winning combination! He told me he didn't like to play Hawaiian Music when he first started to play the guitar. He wanted to play Beatles and Rolling Stones stuff.Sounds like a lot of us!His sets were classic 30's, 40's Hapa Hoale music. Music by Anderson, Owens,(Sweet Leilani) J.A.Noble etc., timless music! I guess he is a cousin to Theresa Bright who plays the ukulele! She actually has a video out on how to play the uke.I guess Iaukea has done some acting too.
I had a good time on the Big Island, I enjoy places like Hawi,Kohala, Honoka'a, Kamuela, Hapuna Beach.
There was quite a bit of damage to some properties in Kailua(Kona) from the Japanese Tsunami.

It is nice to know that there is some active steel guitar playing on the Big Island. Cool There are other steel guitar players on the Big Island, but they are not active, unfortunately, i.e. Al Green comes to mind. He was a student of John Auna and Alan Akaka and regularly played in Kona for a period of time.

Iaukea Bright recorded a couple of songs on an album with other steel guitar players and his style is defintely different. It is a more contemporary style.

Aloha, Smile
