I started with Cakewalk about 10 years ago and kept upgrading to the latest version. Now it's time to get Sonar 6.
I also have Cubase, but the Cakewalk interface is more familiar so I use Sonar most of the time.
I use Wavelab for editing, mastering and burning.
More studio pics here.

I'm still using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 at home, it does what I need it to do, since I'm not a professional studio. [This message was edited by Jim Phelps on 16 September 2006 at 09:23 PM.] |

I have Sonar 5 producer and Dimension Pro as well-for several months. I must confess that I still do my work in Pro 9 and haven't jumped in with both feet on Sonar. Thats several hundred dollars getting software dust on it.
Got to get started on it. It's a shame to waste all them Georges's. |

I used Cakewalk/Sonar 5 for somebody's project awhile back.
I had to tell HIM what his program could do.
It was pretty logical, and I had no issues beyond,
it wasn't my acustomed visual interface.
I figured it out fairly quickly.
But I didn't need yto get into
power abuser mode with it either.[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 17 September 2006 at 09:21 PM.] |

Hey Rick, nice setup I always wondered how those Yamaha o2r's were. I use Sonar 5 PE along with a Roland VM-3100 pro digital board/audio interface. I couldn't imagine not using Sonar. I am a long time Cakewalk user all the way back to before they had digital audio intergrated with it.
I am very happy with Sonar 5 and especially like the Roland V-Vocal. I can't wait to get version 6 and try the new features especially the new pitch shift and audio quantitizing features.

I've engineered several albums using Sonar. I'm currently on v4-producer. I'm still debating if I should jump to v6-producer or wait a few more years. |

Hi Rick, I've been debating about upgrading my current video monitor setup and after seeing yours I think I'll go for it. I already have one 19" scepter monitor and I think I'll buy another one. Walmart has them for 189.00 right now and they are pretty good monitors with great specs.
I get tired of scrolling across to edit all of my tracks. What I was wondering is what kind of video card I'll have to get if any. My current card has 2 outputs on it one is dvi and the other is vga. I wonder if that will work ok or should I invest in another card with either 2 dvi or 2 vga outputs on it.
I know that if I use my 2 outputs the monitor with the dvi will be a little sharper and clearer but I'm guessing it will not create any problems. I hate to have to upgrade video cards too.
That also brings up another question. I have a KVM hooking up 2 computers so I guess I'll have to get another KVM that supports 2 monitors. Man I just keep thinking of ways to spend more money :-)

I really liked 9, especially the way you can drag in an audio clip to raise or lower the db.
They took that out in Sonar, and replaced it with that stupid loop creator.
But on the other hand it has a lot of great new features and an improved audio engine.
I'm about to upgrade to Sonar 6, that should be very interesting.

The O2R 96 is an amazing piece of equipment. It can do just about anything.

I'm not sure how that would work, my card has 2 VGA outputs. It would be kind of distracting if the resolution weren't the same, especially when one app is in both monitors (like in the photo). 2 monitors is also real handy for using 2 apps at the same time - ie Sonar and Wavelab. Each one can occupy an entire screen.

I'm using Sonar5 PE with good results. I will be getting Sonar 6PE in the next month. I really am comfortable with this software and can't wait for Vista...

I began using Cakewalk 4 for DOS what it was MIDI only, after a couple of years with Roger Powell's TEXTURE. I've skipped only a couple of upgrades over the years. I recently upgraded again to Sonar 8.5 Producer (think I'll skip X1 for now) running on a Vista64 laptop (for now). I've used other s/w like Cubase, Nuendo, Logic, and Reaper but I know Sonar better than anything else so I stick with it. It's 20-40% better! (old joke from the Cake forum... ) |

I see an upgrade path for Sonar users that get's 20% off until the 31st. Might be time to upgrade if you haven't already. _________________ Gary Shepherd

I have X1b Producer. I'm not all that thrilled with X1 and have kept 8.5.3 Producer installed but I'm trying to work with X1b.
I just did an 18 demo song project for Jimmy Peppers with X1b, but that was just vocal and rhythm guitar. (They are going to Little David Wilkins in Nashville who has just set up a new publishing company). Peppers wrote Jack Greene's first top 10 song "Love Takes Good Care of Me". |

The problem with Cakewalk is they try to fix things that aren't broken They (Cakewalk) introduced Sonar X1 when there was nothing wrong with Sonar 8.5 that a few little tweaks wouldn't have taken care of, but no doubt Roland was behind this move.
I think we have a lot more changes in store for us if we continue with Cakewalk because Roland has gotten their hooks ie swallowed up Cakewalk and they will probably make so many changes in the next few years that I will most likely jump ship and work in Logic Audio 100% on my MacBook Pro instead of jumping back and forth between the two. Just my opinion

From the Postings I see on the gearslutz forum and other places, the new ProTools 9 isn't much better. One comment I saw said "it would take until ProTools 11 to get all the bugs out".
I tried Reaper and wasn't impressed. I also had a demo of the Presonus recording program and if I were to change I would look at it again. |

Now there's an upgrade path to Sonar X1 for $99 (normally $199) for most registered users. Pretty good deal I think. _________________ Gary Shepherd

I bought X1 Producer "upgrade" for $99 when it first came out.
I am finally using X1(b) for sessions. I had avoided it and kept using the older 8.5.3 but I had a problem with 8.5.3, and had a session scheduled and not enough time to fix it so I had to start using X1. So far, with the fixes they have done, it's doing OK - there are still problems but I can live with the problems for my use. |

I recently did several steel tracks on Tom Bovine's new CD (release date wk of Dec 12)
The studio was running Sonar X1c Producer. The engineer said that the updates allow for faster processing. However, for maximum clarity in the mixdown, he unchecked the "fast bounce" and ran the mixdown in real time. The quality of the master has a very pro sound.
The sample on YouTube is in MP3 which loses a lot, but if you want to listen here is the link.
