Back in the late 30's many of the Lap Steels had what was called a "Mother of Pearl" finish, Oahu's. Dickersons, Silvertones, Gebs, etc. I guess this was to relate to the Hawaii theme. Has this become a lost Art. This was not real Mother of Pearl, but some type of process that was probably sprayed on. My first electric lap steel had this finish and it seemed pretty durable. |

Well,,, most of us call it MOTS. Mother of Toilet Seats. It was, I believe, sorta melted on in sheets. |

If it were only so easy... and safe. There are places that sell the stuff in many more styles than were available just ten years ago, and computer graphic technology makes it even wilder. |

Tom, I remember reading how an inspector to Leo Fender's early guitar shop actually ran away in terror after seeing all that and more! |

I seem to remember reading in a book, (maybe Carson's) that they did the early ones in Mrs. Fender's oven, and that she wasn't happy about it. So, are there two methods of application? Heat and chemical? |

If I remember correctly the early krinkle-finish K&F guitars were the ones that were "oven toasted." _________________ Time flies like an eagle

John,
I think you're probably right. When I worked for Mastronix, we did do the "Krinkle" finishes in an oven. Thanks!
Enjoy your weekend!
