On the Spina steel, it looks to me like that "outrigger" might be more useful on the other side of the steel, so you could lay it down in front of the bar. Of course, then it would have to be manipulated with the thumb. |

That's what I thought when I first saw it... I thought the "miniature bar" should touch the string on the front side of the bar, but after trying it... I realized it doesn't work that way.
The "mini-bar" section should be behind the main bar, and when that section is pressed down the string drops slightly, and dips below the main bar, producing a lower note on that one string, 1/2 tone lower. So the main bar could be on fret 7, for example, and the little bar would be on fret 6... and all of the notes would be heard.
Check the picture below (holding the bar backward, I believe). It feels all wrong... the bar is front heavy, the weight distribution is off. And the position of the finger slot is way off. When I turned the bar the other way (as shown above) the bar felt comfortable and it worked fine and I could hear the string (the note) drop down a half step when I pressed on the mini-bar.

The Spina is very cool - I notice the box says "Minor Steel For Hawaiian Guitar" which fits in with what you were saying. Any idea on how to get one? |
