Lately I have been Skyping with Papabilly Sharpe,
a fellow steel and Hawaiian fan. He reminded me of
this song that Webley Edwards used to use as background for his program intro.
It was always in my mind but I never thought to try it until Papabilly started reminding me of it.
You will recognize it as C6th with E on top and I tune string 7 to a Bb.
Hope it brings back some memories as it did for me.

Nice job Roy! It's not easy to play that beautifully at such a slow tempo.
Thanks! |

Roy, the only things missing are the sound of Waikiki's waves washing ashore and Webley's welcoming introductions "...as Hawaii calls". If I wasn't already here I'd be on my way to the airport to get here! |

As I remember listening to the early "Hawaii Calls" which I believe was transmitted over "Short Wave" radio, I was never sure whether in the background it was the sound of Waves or Short Wave interference. The sound seemed regularly to die out and then come back. |

Millions of people listened for decades to the show, and probably everybody got it in 'waves' as the transmission faded in and out. Jerry Byrd exemplified the frustrations as a studious steeler trying hear the great David Kelii, and griping that it would be nice and clear until time for David's solos which would disappear in the ether and then it would come clear again just as he finished. |

Gorgeous ROY. May I very respectfuly suggest you eliminate the phrase immediately after the first 16 measures as, though you played it beautifuly, that phrase doesn't exist in the original melody. I love your touch and tone and to me, you are the 'jb' of Canada. ACROSS THE SEA was actually the theme song of RAY KINNEY whom I had the pleasure of meeting and befriending a few years prior to his passing. I will always cherish the memories of Ray playing his ukulele and singing this famous theme song as I sat enraptured in the presence of a treasure from the Golden Years of Hawaiian music. In those days, we had no video, just 8mm silent movie film and/or slides, (no cassettes either) ... 41 years ago Ray and I spent many precious moments together as we discussed his awesome career in New York with his big band. ACROSS THE SEA was not necessarily a Hawai'i Calls feature, though it was heard on the show. I'm wondering if you might be thinking of DAVID KELI'I playing TWILIGHT IN HAWAI'I many times on those old Hawai'i Calls shows ? Roy, you are an AWESOME steel guitarist. I have never heard a more lovely tone other than from the Master himself!

Aloha Keoki,
You're right. "Twilight In Hawaii" was the theme song for Hawaii Calls, and at one point, so was "Low Moon At Waikiki". |

Hi George and thanks for chiming in!
According to my count the passage you refer to is
a long gliss or slide. (octave + 1/2) I will go back to the traditional dominent seventh pregression.
Your knowledge and experience when it comes to
Hawaiian music is a valuable resource.
BTW I have been in touch with our mutual friend Keith
Delong and he has himself a Lap Steel now and getting
started. He seems to be enjoying the challenge.
All the best
