I have become enchanted by this 1944 Andy Iona tune from Cord International's "History of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar" CD. The liner notes says Jules plays it in D9th (E-C-A-F#-E-C#)I am having trouble figuring out how he plays the intro and first verse. I just can't seem to make it sound right. Anyone play this song in this tuning? I would appreciate any help. |

Sorry, can't help ya. I figured it out some years back in C6 though and it sounded right to me. If I recall correctly, there was a lot of slanting going on in the last few bars of the intro. |

Hey Bill,
I was trying it in C6th also, but it was missing something on the intro and first verse. I can imagine a lot of slants in these passages, or perhaps some pivots from the middle of the bar. Thanks for your response. It might be one of the many things I will never be able to figure out! |

Hey Steve, I figured it out in C6. I don't have much experience writing tab so please excuse the messiness. Also, match the notes to the rhythm that Jules does on the recording. My slash mark rhythms are approximations only.

Here's my funky attempt at tab. Rhythms are approximate. This isn't the whole intro but it's got the juicy parts...

Bill,
Thank you so much for going to the trouble to tab this out! I really appreciate your efforts. I am going to try it out tomorrow.
Not sure if you recall but I met you at the Joliet HSGA convention a few years (quite a few)back. You were impressed I brought my espresso machine. Just like vintage Hawaiian music, I have to have it.

Steve:
I can't help you much, but you might get in touch with John Ely, www.hawaiiansteel.com. He list this tune in his index. He is very nice and would probably be able to shed some light on this;

Hi Charles,
Thanks for the tip...I will check it out.
Meanwhile Bill's tab has been very useful. After a bit of practice I am able to make it sound fairly convincing. I would have never come up with the grips to play this on my own. It surprises me to hear some of these moves coming out of my guitar! I can already hear how to use these positions in some other songs. Thanks again Bill and Charles! |

The best that you can do if you want to get the tab to the song, My Rose of Waikiki, is to subscribe to the Aloha Dream magazine, which is published in the United Kingdom by Basil and Pat Henriques. It is a well done magazine which I subscribe to and highly endorse it. An annual subscription is $35.
Basil stated that he would do some Jules Ah See classic songs in tablature. So let's have it Basil. Your fans are awaiting the Jules Ah See classics.
You can contact Basil at email: info@waikiki-islanders.com
The web page is www.waikiki-islanders.com
Aloha,
Don

Don,
You sweet talker, I just signed up for the magazine. Thanks for the advise! What are the odds they are currently featuring the same song I have been struggling with for weeks now. I think it was meant to be!
Steve
I am loving the tab in C6th that Bill posted.
I will be curious to see what tuning the magazine tab shows. |

Steve,
I have made a mistake in thinking that My Rose of Waikiki was the current magazine tab. I should have checked more closely. Basil has been planning to do some of these classic Jules Ah See recordings in tablature for the Aloha Dream Magazine and I mixed this up.
The tab that is in the current magazine is Jules Ah See's rendition of Mauna Kea. The second part of Mauna Kea comes in the next magazine.
Would you call Basil at Phone: 0182 770 4110 or email him and tell him the situation which I have caused. I'm sure he will put My Rose of Waikiki in an upcoming magazine and he could give you the introduction to My Rose of Waikiki in the meanwhile.
I think that he will be helpful to you. He is a friend of mine.
Tell Basil to continue the tab section in his magazine because that is why you subscribed. He has talked nonsense of doing away with the Tab section.
To reach out to you for my mistake, I can send you a tab with notes of My Rose of Waikiki that is an excellent tab but not just like Jules played it if you will give me your address. You can do that by emailing me. I feel very bad about this. Sorry!!
Aloha,
Don

Hi Don,
No worries. I did email Basil, and said perhaps My Rose of Waikiki would be tabbed in a future edition (hint, hint). Looking forward to getting my first issue. Thanks again for recommending it.
