Continuing my quest for a budget entry into the world of PSG, it's been suggested I head down the self-build road. Which got me thinking.....is there a 'Stewart Macdonald' of the PSG world? i.e: a one-stop shop for a PSG in kit form? 3 pedal+ 1 knee, I can make the cabinet. Any ideas?

Thanks..tried to register but couldn't get past the 'automated-response' defence! Answered PSG questions seven times to prove I was a human, access still denied. Weird.

It usually works fine, but protection against the "bad" elements is high.

There is an item on ebay which consists of an entire set of parts from a shobud - cabinet, legs, mechanical parts, etc. I think "basket case" was in the title.

My mistake. It was actually here on the forum and it's been sold.

I've tried many times before with no success. I'm getting the distinct impression this is a very exclusive club sort of like "us four and no more", but the reason escapes me.
I went to the link recommended just above my post and Larry says just "shoot me an email" and wel'll take care of you but of course there is no email. I'm finished with trying to become a part of this whatever it's supposed to be...................clark

I became a member there a few months back, but as I recall, it took a few days for them to approve me. I don't think they're actively rejecting you, but only slow to respond.

Actually, I intend to try and fill that void for kits. It's going to take some time as I have to develop the modular aspect of most of the components.

I got the sense of need, from reading many of the posts both here and on the builders forum, that many folks would like to be able to purchase all the hardware and provide the 'sweat equity' themselves. Matter of fact I was just contacted by a guy from the Netherlands this morning about this very thing, he wanted to know if I had a kit. I really hated to tell him that I didn't at this time but it is in the plans along with supplying the lap steel guys with parts and hardware. I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine and was discussing this very subject.
As I said, it's going to take a bit of time to accomplish but it is on my radar.

Hope to be able to help you folks in the future.

Michael

P.S. I'm the guy that bought the 'basket case Sho-Bud' that Gary referenced. More research and development material and possibly a test bed for replacement components.

Hi Michael,
I just registered on your site and it went through the very first time. (unlike these other weirdos where I've never been able to even get to the approval process). Looking forward to following your progress and wish you the very best in this adventure......clark

So, you're saying that the concept worked out and it turned well enough to hold on to it for over 30 years?
Looks like it's time for that idea to come back around, eh?

But $150!! Sweet!!.......Now back to reality in the 21st century, that ain't gonna happen ever again. I do want to offer something that's good enough to have that kind of longevity and is priced reasonably enough that more folks are able to enjoy the pleasure of not just making music but the sweet sound of a cryin' steel!

The time has come for the steel to come to the forefront. I just finished watching American Idol and they had a Sierra on stage, out front, in I think 3 or 4 sets. I told the missus' that's more exposure that a PSG has had, on national television, in more than 20 years.

We need to have an avenue that younger musicians can afford to get more involved and proficient with this instrument. We also need more of the experienced players passing whatever knowledge on to the younger generations.

Well, I just heard something go 'CRACK' so I'd better get off this box.

Thanks to all of you who have supported my site and and posted words of encouragement. We'll see just how far I can ride this horse.

Michael S., what was the name of the kit that you bought back in '79?

Michael

Hi MIke,
I remember the $150 kits. They were advertised in Guitar Player magazine in the early 70's. They were"Mark 1's or Mark 4's" or something like that. The ad's for these are on sale on ebay all the time.

BTW. I now have my Professional all in peices also. I decided to keep the basket/barrel set up and not up grade. I just need left knee and right knee, right
bracketry. I have the knee levers. Any ideas? Ron

Ron,

I've got some parts in process for the knee brackets and hope to get back to all the 'Bud kits in the next few weeks. I'll let you know. I'm finishing up MSA kits now.

I thought that I'd seen some ads for kits somewhere. Must've been on ebay the other night.

Michael and Papa Joe, what were the good and bad points about those kits? Why were they so hard to get right?

It's been so long that I don't remember much detail..I had some machine shop experience so it seems the guitar went together with out much problem. The big issue was the changer and return springs..It just didn't return to tune.I remember adding springs and dead stops till it got better.I gave up on the 2nd string lower and just tuned it to C# and played it that way..
I hope if you build one you'll use metal instead of plastic on it.
In my opinion the changer will have to both raise and lower..
You might want to take a look at Jerry Blantons bell crank design..It's good..P.J...
