I have been thinking about searching for a good playable pre war Rick bakelite. 7 string if I can find one. I would be interested in finding one with the metal on the front not the white plastic. I am just doing some research now not actually asking to buy one. I am interested in what everyone thinks is a good price range for a good player mechanically with descent cosmetics. Not a truly collectible one. Also is there a preferred model to get that JB sound. Thanks for any help. _________________ Georgeboards D8 Twin Princess, Fender Custom T8, Fender Stringmaster T8, Pre-war Rickenbacher 7string bakelite, Clinesmith D8 pedal steel, Clinesmith T8 non pedal steel, Simmons Genesis PSG, Simmons D10 psg, Peavey NV 112, Fender 65Princeton Reverb, Roland Cube |

Finding a 7 string will be more of a challenge that a pre-war 6. Good luck though........ |

Most any Bakelite will give you the JB sound. He could get it out of any of them, of course. Price wise, anything under 2K in decent cond. would be reasonable today for a 7, but less is always better. |

I have another question. How does the sound of the silver ricky compare to the bakelite models especially for hawaiian music? _________________ Georgeboards D8 Twin Princess, Fender Custom T8, Fender Stringmaster T8, Pre-war Rickenbacher 7string bakelite, Clinesmith D8 pedal steel, Clinesmith T8 non pedal steel, Simmons Genesis PSG, Simmons D10 psg, Peavey NV 112, Fender 65Princeton Reverb, Roland Cube |

I have a database of sales from eBay. Here's a summary:
Pre-war 6 string: average $877, 10% chance of exceeding $1200
Pre-war 8 string: average $1242, 10% chance of exceeding $1565
Post-war 6 string: average $697, 10% chance of exceeding $950
Post-war 8 string: average $1062, 10% chance of exceeding $1315
Pre-war seven string is quite uncommon on eBay, so if that's the one you want, you will need to snipe the first one you see and be prepared to put in a bid of at least $1100, maybe even $1300.
None of my analysis takes into account any extra variables like quality, coming with a case, broken tuner knobs, serial number, originality of electronics, or anything else the seller things is important. If the guitar plays, these are the prices.
Personally, I think the biggest driver of variation in prices is how many other people there are who want the same item at the same time. I should have been keeping track of number of bids when I started my database. |

The sheet metal guitars definitely sound different. I have a B6, B8, post war NS and (had a) pre-war 59. The latter two are metal.
I like the sound of all of them, but I personally think I can hear the hollow-ness and the tinniness of the metal. Maybe it's psychological... I should listen to someone else play while my eyes are closed so I'm unbiased... |

Thanks Mike that was very helpful information. It will give me a baseline on price before taking into account the other variables you mentioned. _________________ Georgeboards D8 Twin Princess, Fender Custom T8, Fender Stringmaster T8, Pre-war Rickenbacher 7string bakelite, Clinesmith D8 pedal steel, Clinesmith T8 non pedal steel, Simmons Genesis PSG, Simmons D10 psg, Peavey NV 112, Fender 65Princeton Reverb, Roland Cube |

Like I always say, there's just nothing like a bakelite, with some having better tone than others (for some reason I'll never understand) |

You can hear the TONE most steel players would be willing to die for simply by going to YOU TUBE, Wayne Tanner's Steel Guitar Tutorials #1 & #2. It's on SGF Member Ray Montee's channel.
I think you'll enjoy it........... |

Mitch if they all cost $2900 my search would stop. My wife would send me and the cats away for good if I did that. If I decide to go through with this I will need to sell one or two guitars first. No telling how long that could take so my inquiry is just a beginning step so I can try to buy what I want the first time. I always over research things to death before I decide. Drives my wife nuts. _________________ Georgeboards D8 Twin Princess, Fender Custom T8, Fender Stringmaster T8, Pre-war Rickenbacher 7string bakelite, Clinesmith D8 pedal steel, Clinesmith T8 non pedal steel, Simmons Genesis PSG, Simmons D10 psg, Peavey NV 112, Fender 65Princeton Reverb, Roland Cube |
