Topic: Problems with Grovers on Emmons Legrande II |

I am having problems with the grovers on my Emmons Legrande II. Its seems that the thread housing is too short and some are becoming stripped. When I bust a string, the whole thing comes apart. I would like to replace all of them, where should I order them from?

| I had that issue with my Mullen. I ended up removing the washers. That solved the problem. |

i replace some of the washers with nylon washers, it helped a little, but the problem still exist. It makes it hard to change strings without an extra hand.

| Agreed, remove the washers and do not over tighten the nuts. I have found as long as the machines don't fall off or are under string tension, the mission is accomplished. |

No, i don't think it is a design flaw. Emmons didn't make them, Grover did.
I have had the same problem and i have replaced them with new Grovers. Problem solved.
So if it is a design flaw then it is a design flaw by Grover.

| Au contraire. Emmons should have milled their keyheads to properly fit whatever type of tuners they were using, so the design flaw is on them, IMO. |

| If you get a new set, check them very close and make sure they fit. Take just 1 key out and make sure it goes in without any problem. I changed the keys on my MSA S10. I ended up having to drill every hole out and then the screw heads were too big and had to cut them down so they would clear the new gear case on the new keys. Thank goodness I have a lathe, drills and a Dremmel tool in order to install the new one. The set works great and cured all my problems but, were a lot of work, the stem was one drill size larger than the originals. What looked like an hour job turned into about 5 or 6 hours to complete. I ordered and received my Emmons D10 in 93. Very sweet steel. However... The Grover tuners were junk. I ordered Sperzal tuners from Bobbe Seymour. I had to do a little drillin' on my keyheads, but it was worth it. No more funny string installation, and no more detuning issues.

Looks like I'm not the first to encounter this problem. Got me a new set of tuners from fobro Larry Petree. Be putting them on at the next restringing.

You gotta love the forum. So, if i get a new set of modern grovers, it should fix the problem? Gotta get through two gigs this weekend. I'll most likely order on monday. Thanks guys

The new Grovers, full size are available at Stew-mac.com for around 45$ a set, I usually get 2 set's of 3x3 per side, 18:1 ratio, less than 100 bucks  |

Emmons had a problem with the Grovers around 93 and 94. I have a '96 LeGrande that Jack built (the blue lacquer one) and have never had a problem with the keys on that guitar and never had a problem on any later models than '95. You can get the new Grovers from Emmons (or me), or Billy Knowles and be confident that they will be right.
