If you want to see some REAL country music in Branson, Marty is doing a tribute to his dad, Merle Haggard. He has put together a great band with Gene Mulvaney on the steel guitar nailing those classic Norm Hamlett licks!! Marty also has long time stranger, Mark Yeary, on keyboard who played on more than 30 of Merle Haggard's hits. Eugene Moles is playing lead guitar doing a great job on the Roy Nichols style. The classic Haggard sound can definately be found here.

Marty is playing at the Clay Cooper Theater through December. To see the show times you can go to: http://www.claycoopertheatre.com/
If you like Merle Haggard music you will LOVE this show!!

I will get down to see this one before it is over. Gene Mulvaney is one fine Steel player and a great all around musician. Tell him hello for me. I have known him since his early childhood. I live near his home in southern Illinois. Looking forward to seeing the show. Geno I know you will be having fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year Gene had me sub for him several times
for him with Marty and that was a treat playing
with Eugene and Marty.
Also on this years band is bassist deluxe, Mark
Abbott, known for his tenure with Tom Morrells
Time-Warp Tophands, Ray Price, Sons Of The
Pioneers, etc.

Yea Russ, I knew Mark looked familiar but I just couldn't place him. Now I know I've seen him many times at the Dallas steel show.

Marty has a great fiddle player too but I can't remember his name. Also, Marty's wife Tessa is singing backup vocals and doing a great job! These guy's are really smokin' & have the Haggard sound on the money! They even have 3 or 4 Bob Wills songs in the set and are every bit as good on those too!

I bet it was a blast getting to set in with them.....maybe you will get to again this year!!

That may likely be Nathan Agdeppa, who
played with Marty last year as part of
the 'Country Tonite' show, which
didn't return this year.

Actually Russ it wasn't Nathan...He is a great player, I remember him from last season. That was a great band last year but I think the one Marty has put together this year is a step up and even more true to the Haggard sound.

I watched the video of the show and here's the line up for this year:

Keyboard: Mark Yeary
Acoustic/Lead Guitar/Harmony: Barry Bales
Harmony: Tessa Haggard
Bass: Mark Abbott
Drums: Jimmy Hyde
Fiddle: Billy Warden
Lead Guitar: Eugene Moles
Steel: Gene Mulvaney

Awesome, Billy's a great player, as is Barry.
It's swell that Marty has gotten to 'hand-pick'
the players he wanted for his own production
this year.

Yea, Marty told me last year the he was looking forward to this years band and I see why....they sound great. The have most all the signature licks down but Marty lets them stretch out quite a bit too!!

Now if Memorial day will get here and the crowds return to Branson as usual, maybe they can all afford a good meal! The town was pretty much dead last week with all the bad weather & floods!!

Is that Mark Yeary any kin to Denny Yeary, the bass singer of the Blackwoods? Denny is from KC and I worked with him at an Opry Show in Atcheson KS back in the late 80's, before the Blackwoods set up a show in Branson.

I'm not sure if their kin or not....about all I know about Mark is he was born & raised in California and hooked up with Merle when he was about 20.

If he's from California he's probably not related to Denny, although Denny used to work as a backup singer for Roy Rogers and Dale Evans based in California.

Sounds like quite a band and show. I greatly appreciate their choice of music. Laughing

I first saw Mark Yeary play with Hag in Anaheim, CA when I was a teenager...and I think so was he. Fast forward a few decades and I got to meet him at Scotty's a couple years ago. It was great talking with him and he seemed truly appeciative that fans would seek him out when he was in the hall.
