The Ventures are playing here in Portland next Thursday May 12th at The Crystal Ballroom.
I think I am going to check 'em out.
I may even throw for the VIP Meet & Greet.
I was in a band that opened up for them in Lewistown, Montana on their 1984 Tour.

Yeah Pete, they've been through here twice in the last three years and they're still pretty good. The tunes are so great and there are so many of them...I went to see the Everly brothers years ago and they had Buddy Emmons with them at that time. I can remember walking away from that show with at least ten songs that came to mind that they hadn't included in the playlist. The Ventures are like that. And how terrific would it be to open for them. That's gotta be a great memory. Cheers. |

I noticed that on that clip Nokie Edwards was playing a guitar with a Bigsby Palm Pedal. Could have been the one he got from me. Somewhere around '76 or '77 I was working part time afternoons at a music store in Inglewood, California called Nash's Music. I did setups and repair and all that stuff........
One day our guitar instructor (Al Bruno) brought Nokie in as he'd seen the Bigsby Palm Pedal on Al's Gibson and wanted one. However, he wanted a unit with four levers on it which would raise the 1st four strings a whole tone each and he wanted it installed on a vintage Telecaster he had........
I took two palm pedals and took the levers off of one frame and installed them on the other so I had a four lever unit. I remember that I had to shim the neck to get the right string angle so they'd work. I also cut off the two outside levers and raised them farther away from the guitar body so to use them all you'd have to do was slide your hand back.
I noticed that the guitar Nokie was playing in that clip had the "G" lever shortened so it might have been the one I did for him with two levers removed. Here's a shot of one of my BPP guitars with the "G" lever shortened. I have four guitars with these devices on them and all the G levers are shorter....JH in Va.

There were more Ventures YouTubes with guest artists, done apparently at the same time as the one with Skunk-one of "Hawaii 5-0" with Max Weinberg and an absolutely superb "Apache" with Peter Frampton.Just goes to show what might have been if the band had added a bass player(maybe a steel player too?) and had Bob and Nokie doing twin leads instead of them just switching instruments....
There were also some good views of Nokie's BPP with 2 levers. That series of Youtubes led me to a couple of mid-'50s vids from Lawrence Welk, one of Buddy Merill, and another of Alvino Rey.Both just excellent!
Thanks again,Terry! |
