The booth that I had for 10 years at the CMA's Fan Fair has been denied once again by Rock promoter CEO of the CMA. The booth that I had Don Helms and John Hughey signing autographs is no longer welcome. Rock has taken over in Nashville. The new criteria for having a booth at the CMA's annual Music Festival has been changed. If you are Classic Country forget it. Mr. Moore does not want any connection whatsoever with the artists that made Nashville famous as Music City USA. He is a rock promoter and a promoter of the new rock/country music. What a shame that, as predicted a few years ago, the rock promoters would take over the CMA. They have done it. Would you believe that Willie Nelson, Hank Jr., Mel Tillis, Marty Stuart, Johnny Bush and even Garth Brooks are not eligible to be part of the CMA's doings unless they sign in one of the corporate sponsors booths such as Wrangler, Dish Network Tv, Microsoft, Sprint/Nextel or several dozen other booths. I always liked to feature the steel guitar players in my booth so that we could introduce the fans to the people that really made the music. No longer. Shame, shame on Steve Moore and all the other rock promoters that have taken over the CMA.

The CMA is a rock organization. So is CMT. Shame on performers like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and George Strait for not standing up publicly and defending traditional country music.

And when all the remaining original performing Opry members, which you can count on your hands, are gone, rocking country will take over and it will not be our Grand Ole Opry anymore!

That's okay, Theresa, as long as you use your ear buds. Laughing
Shouldn't this topic be somewhere else besides "steel players?"

I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with the thought of Garth Brooks "standing up publicly and defending traditional country music" ….. Shocked

When are you guys going to stop being surprised at the inevitable and constant winds-of-change blowing through country music (and every other kind, come to that).

The so-called 'legends' of the Opry may be held in high regard by some, but they don't make any significant sums of money for anyone. Maybe this new crop of artists aren't doing much better, but you can bet the 'suits' will keep that revolving door going until someone does.

Roger, the term "you guys" is a pretty broad brush to be using here, and I would rather not be included if you don't mind. Smile

Sorry, Barry; I thought that as I typed it, but then decided that the content of your posts clearly disqualified you for inclusion in my generalisation. My target was the seemingly endless stream of threads bemoaning the current state of country music. This one is yet another.

What does "IFCA" stand for?

I googled it, and here are the top entries on the page:

IFCA International: an association of churches, pastors, Christian lay workers, etc.

Indiana Football Coaches Association

Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Association

llinois Fire Chiefs Association

Interior Finish Contractors Association

Is it one of these?

Well, I quite like 'good country steel guitar', but I like lots of other things as well - even some distorted rock guitar....

I also like the Dixie Chicks! Very Happy

I kind of like "a bit" of distortion now and then too - on steel. Probably influenced by a particular tune on this old LP...

Okay, I'll say it: current "country" sucks. not because I'm an old man. It sucks because the lyrics are trite, the singers stink and the picking leave a lot to be desired. It's crap. Same as an Ipod is crap. It's all dumbed down. Prozak set to 4/4.

There, I said it...

Come on, people. Time to move on! Traditional country, like all kinds of music that successfully spoke to people, is intrinsically bound to a time place and culture. When that time passes it passes.

It is too bad they don't take care to celebrate the founding fathers of country music. THat is the only legitimate complaint.

I'm 65 years old and even I think of this forum as a bunch of grumpy, out of touch, old geezers after reading countless similar threads!

We are steel guitar fanatics! Of course we will listen to and appreciate almost any piece of junk with a prominent steel guitar. (I say "almost" because I still don't understand the resistance to Robert Randolph- the ONLY popular and recognizable steel guitar player in modern music.

And Tom Quinn!!!! How you can call anything trite if your a traditional country fan. I am constantly amazed at country music's endless utterly trite and simple-minded celebration of crude and tawdry love life, alcoholism, and low-brow moralizing all expressed in 3rd grade language and allusions.

Popular music is an ongoing dialogue in the vernacular of the times. Of course it is distorted by corporate marketing. Big surprise. Go ahead and listen to Willie Nelson, and Bob Wills, and Buddy Emmons. I often do. I often listen to Bach and Chopin, the Stones and the Beatles, and other great music of the PAST.

If you don't want to join the real world, don't. Okay with me. But at least acknowledge reality.
