Topic: Anyone ever hear of Lenny Breau playing pedal steel? |

I just finished reading a review of a Lenny Breau biography, and there was a quote from Don Thompson that said "Lenny played the snot out of the pedal steel." Has anyone ever heard of Lenny playing?

I've never heard of Lenny Breau playing pedal steel. Every link I could find for Lenny Breau + pedal steel said Buddy Emmons was the steel player.

I own a copy of "one long tune" the life and music of Lenny Breau.
In there is a lot on Don Thomson and quotes from Don on Lenny's playing, but nothing on his ability to play the pedal steel (bassguitar- yes) |

he strikes me as a guy who could've probably just sat down at a steel and made it sound pretty darn good in no time at all. i'm sure he had many opportunities to do just that.
but no, i've never heard of him playing a steel.

Here is the direct quote (it may have come from Ron Haldorson): "I had my pedal steel guitar set up, and Lenny could play the shit out of that, too."

| I took several lessons from Lenny.....He said he did not play or understand how the instrument is played and was reluctant to take me on as a student....In the lesson he was curious about how the pedals worked.....He sounded just like everyone I've met who loves the instrument but knows nothing about how its played........Paul |

Lenny never played the pedal steel as far as I know. He was a pure guitar player and in his early career played the bass guitar. You can hear his bass playing and lead paying in tunes like Little Blues. The fact that Lenny wad a fingerstyle player might lead someone into thinking that he could play the pedal steel, yet I have never heard of him playing the steel.
Paul Franklin should know.
But, it should be noted that Lenny thought like a Pedal steel player with all the moving voices, pedal changes to different notes. I know why Paul wanted lessons from him because he played the guitar like a piano player.
Long live Lenny...he was the best!

I grew up here in Winnipeg and in the 60's Lenny was just one of the local musicians we younger players looked up to. A very approachable guy...very eager to share his ideas. For many years he had a trio that played in the local coffee houses and jazz clubs. That trio was Lenny, Reg Kelln drums and Ron Halldorson on bass. They were with him on his first couple of albums. Ron Halldorson's first instrument is steel guitar. I'm pretty sure Mr Franklin knows who he is. So I would think Lenny knew quite a bit about the steel especially given his background in and real love of country music. However I doubt if he ever played the instrument...his world was strictly the six string guitar. If you booked a lesson with Lenny in those days, and he happened to be practicing something, you could wait hours and not see him at all. I think the person who played the snot out of the steel guitar would have been Ronny Halldorson. You can hear Ron play "Some other blues" on the Steel guitar jazz site.
