Hi,
Hopefully some of the other forum members are from around Brisbane in Australia.
I just picked up my first pedal steel guitar and before I develop too many bad habits I'd like to have at least a few sessions with a teacher/experienced player. I'm a moderately experienced electric guitar player.
I have the Bruce Bouton Dvd and Winnie Winston's book, but some hands on teaching would be great.
Even someone willing to look at my seat height and hand positions and give me a few pointers would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Ian |

G'day Ian and welcome. Follow this link and come to one of the monthly meetings and to the upcoming festival in Brissy. All the info is on the site. There are a few of us on the forum. What's your steel??

Hi Jeff,
Good to see there are some fellow Brisbanites on the forum. I came across the Steel Club site last week and I'm keen to come along to the next meeting (did I just miss one this past weekend?). Most of the teachers listed on the site aren't in Brisbane though - from memory I think only one of them was. I was just wondering if there were more around?
My steel is a Shobud Maverick. I saw all the warnings on this forum and was pretty dubious at first, but it's been majorly overhauled with an entirely rebuilt mechanism (by JBR Guitars down near Gosford). It's one of the older birdseye maple ones, and has 3 pedals and 4 knee levers installed (however one of the knee levers isn't being used at the moment, so eventually I'll be looking for someone to add a change).
At this stage I'm still coming to grips with the instrument - but really enjoying myself and looking forward to a long relationship with it!

Well done on the purchase. I think the older mavericks, as yours is I think, are the better ones but thats been hashed out on this forum at length. Noel Anstead is a stallwart of the club and offers brilliant advise to us all. You would know him as the builder of the Anapeg Steel Guitars - one of the finest pedal steels in the world as many would vouch for here. Many in the club have an Anapeg Steel. He has retired from building but he playing at the upcoming festival. That teacher you refer to would be larry H but there is another who may be willing to teach from the club. Yes you did just miss a meeting so did I. Jim Priebe is from Dalby and he is playing this year and giving a workshop - sign up. He now is also a member of the forum. Bob Alloway, Ian Kerr are also members from Brisbane. Michael Rose, Tommy Grasso are also forum members- brilliant players!
We may catch up.
Cheers
