I can not get my 4th string to lower properly. It goes sharp when returned to E. Raises fine, lowers fine. any suggestions.

Hi Bob, I have never had a problem with lowering my E string, sometimes it does not return to pitch! _________________ LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN GEORGIA

Check tension on the lower-return spring on 4th string. |

Normally, I'd guess it was an issue with 'timing' on the rod travel. If 4,and 8 top, and bottom out at different rates, it could cause a squirrely anomaly like that.
But, since your trouble seemed to clear up within a two minute time-frame between your first, and second post...I'm gonna guess that you had a loose string ball-end wedged somewhere underneath. (?)

I had a similar tuning problem with my 4th string lower on a Carter, and it originated in the changer. The 4th string lower and raise were affecting one another due to some sort of binding. Lower your E string, return it, and check the tuning. Then raise your C pedal (and/or lever raise for E) and return them. Check again to see if the tuning has righted itself, or if you see any cheanging in the lpitch of the open 4th string. If so, you have a problem with binding in the changer or pull rods. This may not be the exact cause, but it's worth a try. I hope my explanation is not too confusing. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Guys, he stated the 4th string is problematic. The second post states there is no issue with the companion 8th string changes.
Bob, How much sharp is it? A phenomenon called hysteresis is an issue with plain strings that snap back sharp when returned from lower. If you just touch the pedal or raise lever, it probably returns to zero? This is not normally a huge problem.
If you are using an electronic tuner, you should normally see just a small amount of deviance to the sharp side.
Some guitars have an O ring compensator to relieve this problem.
If this is not your condition, then further examination is in order. |

The 4th string fingers are busy because they typically have two raises and a lower. Hence, they are prone to possible issues between the raises and lowers. I know I'm stating the obvious but the changer shouldn't be overlooked with regard to this issue. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

I will try to clear up my problem with the 4th string. When I tune it for lowering to Eb it returns sharp quite a bit. I notice a large amt of travel on knee lever as compared to E raise. This affects the 4th string only. The steel is a 08 Fessy SD10. there are no ketches in lever movement. It moves smoothly. I can't see any thing in changer. This is the only problem that I have with the steel. I hopes this explains better what my problem is. Thanks for the help. Bob |

One more thing to check, Bob. I didn't re-check to see if it's been mentioned here yet,... but it's quite possible that your 4th string roller is locked up, or that a small burr on the inside of the roller groove is hanging things up.
Have you checked that? _________________ Bessdang Gizmos - "An Equal Opportunity Annoyer" |

Dale I will check my rollers to see if they are hanging up. I have had this problem since I got it. It didn't bother me much as I hadn't learned to use them. Now I have some music that it can be used. Thanks Bob |
