I've been invited to demonstrate and play my steel at my grandson's (3 year olds) pre-school. Anybody ever do anything like this? Suggestions? |

First... Most will have the attention span of a 2 week old puppy. Not a bad thing!
Second... Forget about what you know, play what they know!
Third... Make it fun for them so they will remember you and your table top stringie thingie...
How... Have your steel already set up and covered with a sheet. Wear one of those big foam cowboy hats and come riding in on a stick horse. Sing them a Sons Of The Pioneers song, look for Indians. They will love you, your music making machine, and your horse and hat. Don't be to serious. That will kill the mood. Three to five songs, max. Smile and laugh... And give them a great show.
Oh, did I say they would love you... |

I just love this kind of stuff. You are a lucky man to have the chance to introduce the steel to young minds. 3 year olds love everything when it comes to music. I have 2 granddaughters 4 and 6 and a grandson 2 who just love the guitar, pedal steel and song.
Like Dick said, play the stuff they know, like Twinkle Twinkle (or ABC) and The Wheels on the Bus.
They'll be fascinated with the steel bar that slides up and down and also the pedals.
Do sound effects for them, like siren and train

I did the same thing at my daughter's preschool last year. It was fun, I just let them ask questions and tried to answer as best I could after demonstrating. The kids had a great time. I love Dick's suggestions, wish I'd thought of that before!

Greetings Steve
i did a few steel initiations at my kid's school
the lap steel was more appropriate for the kids to try out than a psg
they had a good time but dropped the bar a bunch of times
so, don't leave 'em w:a BJS... |

Do not let any of the Children gather around at each end of your Steel Guitar, God Forbid ! if a string broke it could take out an eye. |

Just slide the bar up and down real fast making silly noises and laugh a lot.
It's worked for me over the years. _________________ Cops aren't paid much so I steel at night. |

The big performance was April 28. The kids really enjoyed it and were fascinated by my steel. I did some sound effects, 'Twinkle, Twinkle... ", "Tennessee Waltz", "Ride, Ride, Ride", played "Freight Train" with one of the dads, and threw in "Stompin' at the Savoy" for good measure.
My grandson, Graeme.

Gee Dick. That's the way I play all the time
Steve, I can't advise you as I've never had the opportunity to do this but I'd like to. Some seed may be planted here. Good Luck and have fun

Steve, What a great thing you have done here!
You have introduced the pedal steel to those young impressionable, open minds! What a fine thing you have done for humankind. Now these little ones will definitely carry this in their minds and it is very possible that a steel player or 2 will turn out form this demo. Look at those small ones, the way they pay attention and just sit there and seem to soak it all up.
Handsome grandson you have there - There is steel guitar written all over his face
Please, repeat this every opportunity you get. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars
