It's never enough is it? It hit me that it's more entertaining to sing while you play (witness all the guitar/singers) when I wrote a lyric one night, painting myself into a corner having to learn to sing and fiddle. Most people say it can't be done, but we weren't supposed to fly either.
So - the other difficult instrument: the pedal steel... What's the verdict on singing? I guess there's less acapella going on with PSG than with violin. But, if you get a bump on the head...

Geez - 20 strings, 5-string fiddle, and the idiot wants to sing, too... There's a lot of going on going on when you pedal and steel and pick - and knee, and breathe. Anyway...

I don't sing often, but when I do I'm usually playing steel too as it's my instrument. Singing takes more concentration than playing steel, for me anyway. I don't too think much about the steel parts. They're pretty automatic.

When I play my Summer gig at Medora Musical in ND I also play a daily set at the Pitchfork Fondue - that's a kind of glorified barbecue that's open immediately before the main show.

We assemble various groups with different singers, and I'll sometimes sing a few songs while playing steel. I can't play anything complex while actually caterwauling, but I have learned to comp a rhythm part fairly effectively. It does sometimes afford the band some amusement when I get absorbed in completing what I imagine to be an important phrase on my guitar, then forget to sing the next line!

The punters are all 'at the trough', so I doubt they even notice!

I only sing at the end of the gig, it helps to get rid of the punters...

I remember all the old fiddlers would sing when they played around my parts when I was young. Go get up some of those videos of Dennis McGee on youtube. He sings and plays the fiddle non-stop during the verse and then plays just fiddle during the chorus.

I've always done it a bit with pedal steel, and there are some guys who can do it really well. Pete Burak comes to mind - I used to really enjoy Pete's performances in the Sierra Room at the steel shows. And I do it all the time with my Weissenborn-style instruments, but that is quite a bit easier than doing it while playing pedal steel. It's not as hard as it sounds, but if you don't do it routinely it will seem difficult. Even if you don't sing lead it is nice to be able to add a harmony line or two, and I've known a lot of steel players who do that.

Yep, Lead sing a few songs as I play steel to help out the frontmsan. I got a way to make an audience appreciate our frontman. Evil Twisted
