Here's a link to Fender's press release from their web site. This is a very affordable guitar with a suggested retail price of $459.00 USD. Too bad it's only available with a round neck!
Thanks for pointing out this new instrument, Andy!

In The Hawaiian Steel Guitar compiled by Lorene Ruymar she writes that "The term "steel guitar" refers to a guitar with any number of strings, raised higher off the frets. It is played in the flat or horizontal position with or without supporting legs, and the change of pitch is accomplished by movement of a steel bar held in the left hand.pg.XI.In her book she includes acoustic, resophonic, and electric guitars in the original form. |

The only thing is that guitar does not have raised strings enough to play it with a steel bar, and it has metal frets to play like a regular guitar and that is how it's set up. You can certainly get a nut and raise that one and it might be close to what we know as a steel guitar. You are right that by diffinition that what we play is the Hawaiian Steel Guitar; but everytime I call it that people say huh. So by popular diffinition; that Fender with the resignator is "No Steel Guitar". I'll pass>or better yet I think I'll build my own Hawaiian Steel Guitar.
