Hello
If I do everything right here, you will find a link to a new video that we made. It is my tribute to Tom Brumley who was one of the first I ever heard playing steel on a record, and he is a big inspiration to this day!
I learned to know Tom & Rolene when they came to Norway for our Steel Guitar Meeting in 1997.It was my good friend Steinar Schroeder that made that happen. As you can see from the picture at the beginning,it was in May,but the snow was high as the roof on the bus,so where they stay against the wall of snow,it was around 6-8 feet high! We picked them up after their visit to Sweden, together with Janne Lindgren-also a friend of Tom & Rolene, and one of Swedens best steel players.
After a fine weekend in Hattfjelldal,we met them again in St.Louis.
They came back to Norway a few years later, and this time stayed with us for a couple of days, and we had such a great time with these two gentle people.
I will like to mention the last time we met in St.Louis-me and Dag had planned to go to Texas and see the new show that Tom talked about, and was so proud of.But due to delays,it was not up and running,so we changed our plans for the trip. The day after we came to St.Louis,I came up the escalator, and in the front door came Rolene and Tom! They must have seen how surprised I was,and I asked them what they were doing here? Tom was not on the program that year. The reply was-"Since you did not came to us,we came up here to hang out with you guys!"Was that an honor,or what!.It only show the friendship we got in the few years I have known them.
We still have contact with Rolene,Tracie,Todd, etc on facebbok and mail, and follow their inputs and posts here on the forum as well.
I am sure Rolene will come on here and add her comments.
The music you hear is from my new CD,and the tunes are played the way I remember them from back when I played these records over and over. They are most likely different here and there compare to how Tom played them, but I hope you like it the way I play them as well.
The job with scanning the pictures, and mixing the whole thing together is done by my wife Jofrid (Jo),and I am very thankful for her help! I am not a computer guy!
I still think a lot about Tom,and play his songs all the time..

Egil,
What a beautiful tribute to your mentor, friend and hero!
Your renditions of Tom's waltzes is nothing short of superb. To me it sounds like the Master himself.
Praise goes to Jofrid for her tasteful arrangements in the video.

I had the pleasure of doing a Buck Owens tribute show with Egil in Bergen, Norway a couple of years ago. He nailed the Brumley licks that night!!!
Egil, wonderful job!!! I watched and listened as it brought a tear to my eye. Tom was my friend and inspiration and I miss him. You did a wonderful job on his tunes. Tom is looking down from heaven right now at you and grinning from ear to ear!!!!

When Don Rich was with us, he introduced me to Tom years ago. Tom and I talked when he played the conventions but when I involved with selling ZB's, Tom, at that time what building them and he'd call me when he had a question about a change on a pedal. He was a true gentlman. I enjoyed our little chats. |

First of all; I muct congratulate you, Egil ; for doing such a fantastic job at playing Tom's Music. Truly, Tom would be smiling from Ear To Ear; when listening to this master-piece. As Bent stated; you would almost believe that tom was doing the playing; absolutely " Superb" in my estimation. Brought many tears to my eyes, too, Egil. You should be most proud for a job well done..Your friend , Bent , is one of my dearest friends on this side of the Big Pond. Send us more of this fine playing.. Bernie, just a reminder to you and all the others on this side of the "Pond" - These tunes are on Egil's newest CD "Steel On My Mind". You can get your copy by emailing Egil through this forum.
I have had this CD for a while now and it has had a lot of play. Egil wrote several tunes himself. All the songs have Egil's signature style and beautiful tone. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Hello Bent,and all of you!
Thanks for the kind words about the video,or tune with pictures as I can call it. I know Tom has a lot of friends and fans out there,so it was nice to do such a thing. Musicvise it seems to me that he has always been there since I started listening to Country music in the late 60`s,so he has for sure had a great impact on me.
Thanks for listening! |

Egil, awesome, thanks for that. I was able to speak with Tom a few times at St Louis, his natural demeanor , at least the way I saw it, was to treat everyone like he knew them his whole life. He was very comfortable speaking with anyone and also made those he spoke with feel comfortable. This is an incredible quality for an individual. Tom is one that was able to take a "supporting role" position and have it end up a legacy just by being natural. Plus it didn't hurt that he was a great player !
Thanks for your post and link

Dearest Egil and Jofrid,
What a great tribute to Tom."
Words can't express how proud that I am of what you've put together of my Tom and all his fabulous friends from Norway.
We both truly loved all of you and our trips to Norway was the highlight of our lives. Hope that I get a copy of it.
Thanks from the bottom of my heart...............
Love you all,
Rolene, Tracie, Tommy, and Todd

Dear Rolene and all family.
Thanks for your reply. To meet and learn to know you all has been a highlight in my life. Tom`s music has been with me since before I knew what a steel was,and since I play many of his songs on steel.and play the records he plays on,you are all in my thoughts almost every day! This summer I probably have to be "stand-in" in Steinars band,so I must really sharpen myself on all the good licks Tom played with Buck to be able to do those jobs. But I am sure it will be fun!
Love you all,and hope to see you again someday. |

Tom said of Egil`s playing:" If they put him behind a screen and listen to him play, people will believe it`s me, - and then I can take the day off!"
Indeed, the last time we had Rolene and Tom over to Norway, Egil did an introductory course analyzing Tom`s style of playing for Norwegian steel players
And every time I`ve had problems finding out just how Master Brumley played certain licks, a phone call to Egil in Bergen always solved the problems.
I would like to add my kudos to your cd, Egil, and this Buckaroos tribute band I`m playing with will never want me back after you have subbed for me.
The only problem now is getting you a rhinestone suit, - that will cover ALL of you! |

Just came to think about it-Tracies`s waltz is the first part in this medley, and I remember it was quite a pressure for me and Dag to play this live in St.Louis with Tom,Rolene and Tracie in the audience! You can also find a clip of me and Dag playing that song twinsteel from a church consert here in Norway on my homepage if you like.Tune in to Egil-Skjelnes.com
There are also a lot of tunes under each picture and cover if you wait a few seconds for the music to load.

Egil,
I forget how beautifully you play. This was a nice reminder. Tell Jo the whole package is very well done. It's hard to believe that Tom has passed. Not only was he a master player but he was always so nice to everybody, and humble.

Hi.
Thanks for your time to check in. I used both my Emmons LeGrande III ,and the Zumsteel on this record,But I don`t remember which guitar on what track, some was recorded on the Emmons, and later did a new take on the Zum,so have no idea. Also used my old Nashville 400 that I sold to the guy running the studio, and the rest was on my new Nashville 112.
Thanks,Egil. |
