| Ray, I'd like to hear your track, but it looks like you have uploaded a wave file, 44.5 MB. That just won't work for those of us that have a slow internet connection. The original track was about 8.5 MB, Gary's was about 4.5, mine was smaller, only 1.7 MB. All mp3s, mine was only 56kps. I don't think the lower quality is that noticeable. Maybe you can convert it to mp3 and send it up again? I hope others will keep this in mind if they upload a track. |

| Ray, the easiest way is to open the wave file with a program like audacity, then choose to save it as an mp3. You can also choose the amount of compression. 128kps is Ok, I made mine smaller because it would take it less time to upload. |

That was great Gary, I'm just not sure why you are'nt in a studio in Nashville right now recording. That was very fresh and fitting. Bravo!!

This is my attempt at this song. I'm using a D-10 Emmons LeGrande II, Fender Twin Reverb, and a small amount of delay into a Sansui 6 track tape recorder.

Craig, thanks for your kind words. Regarding Nashville, I'm confident there is no short supply of more qualified players already in a studio with plenty more waiting in line. I've even heard there is one accomplished player who prefers head of the line privileges by busting knee caps with his guitar leg.  Either option is no guarantee to sustain my current standard of living.

Barry, my method of recording was basically simple, like me. If its labor intensive or requires an extended learning curve, I'll generally opt out. Having said that this is what I did. Audio computer out into my Tascam 788 aux in; then pushed play and record buttons at the same time. ISNT THAT SOMETHING? Next, turned on my FSK and RV3 and used a beta Sure SM fifty something, I forget at the moment. No added effects on the mixer although, after listening to the finished product, between some steel pitchyness and occasional nasal sound, I should have tweaked something, but I don't know what. My computer audio output is set to lavatory simulation, I should have changed that too before I recorded Johan's track. BTW, this optional audio output makes my two satellite speakers sound like six..ISNT THAT SOMETHING  Finally, I mixed it down to an Archos mp3 player/recorder which when USBeed, is recognized by WinDex. Then I simply save it to an area that is easily remember for later use. Yes, indeed, steel was up in the chorus....as it should be

It would be great if some pro's or more experienced players/teachers could offer some constructive criticism here. I'm guessing that's why you guys have gone to the trouble, right? I don't feel qualified to comment but I'm going to anyway! 
I just listened again to some of these. Ryan I really liked your tone and you've got some cool licks, especially that one I tagged. Maybe you need to get some more sustain out of your volume pedal technique? (My teacher recently picked me up on this so my ear is zoning in there I guess). Ray, again great tone, nice harmonics, very nice touch. I'm very impressed by the standard of playing here and it's really interesting to hear the different approaches.
I think that Gary has proved the value of repetition - normally such a dirty word, but in a song it's essential. If you don't repeat themes you don't HAVE any themes. Actually Johan your version had a similar approach but I didn't really go for that kickoff lick - it worked better later in the song but I wouldn't have made a hook out of it for this song.
I'm not saying I can as good as you guys, just armchair comments. |

Great sound and playing.
This changes the complete style from the song.
So we all see what the influence is from steelguitar to the overall sound from a song!

I posted my notes on Soundcloud, but I should include them here as well:
<hr>For Johan Jansen's Steel Challenge 1, I decided to add a 50's vintage steel part. This was played on my Desert Rose S-8, tuned to D6/G. I didn't use any pedals, but I did use the D to D# knee lever for several licks. My Don Helms & Little Roy Wiggins influences are very apparent.
It was recorded in GarageBand on a Mac Mini. I used a Goodrich 120 volume pedal and a Line6 TonePort UX2 interface. The steel effects (reverb, etc.) are just stock GarageBand stuff.

| Nice, B0b--I love the 6th sound and I'm always incorporatiing into stuff I do-(I did not on this thing). It's always relegated to western swing and Hawaiian, but I think it could be incorperated in much of today's music. |
