I just installed a new pickup in my aluminum necked guitar. It is a close fit. It looks like a couple of the mounting screws might be making very light contact with the inside of the cavity. Does this affect tone? There do not appear to be any other issues. Thanks.

It shouldn't, unless the pickup is microphonic and "hears" a little more noise.

Jim,
Like Jason says, if the pickup is at all microphonic, you might hear some noise. Try tapping on the side of the pickup with the eraser end of a pencil. See if you hear any noise. What part of the screw might be touching the cavity? The head or the thread? If the thread end is touching, nip off the thread with a screw cutter. If the head end is touching, grip the screw in a ccordless drill and file down the head while the drill is spinning.

You asked if it affects tone. I'd say, if it does, it's very likely for the better. The downside would be picking up more mechanical noise. But I'd think both effects would be slight.

In my experience, very few pickups are not at least somewhat microphonic.
