Oregon steel jam was sweet

Well we did it again, Patti counted 22 guys that played throughout the day. Most all guitar brands and amps were present as well as about 250 years of steel guitar experience. Wow is all I can say and thanks so much to all who came, from the players to the band to the wives and the one waitress who took care of all of us for 4 hour plus.

October looks like the next potential jam, everyone is wanting more, so we will see.

The jam was well attended and a lot of fun. The usual catching up on stuff, checking out gear and telling stories. A special thanks to Larry Behm for getting the organizational ball rolling and to the house band Kindling featuring Robin Suskin on steel and as the moderator. Also thanks to the Spinning Wheel here in Canby, OR; a longtime classic roadhouse for hosting the event. Other players included Harley James, Eric West, Pete Burak, Wes Bakken, Larry Cummings, Paul Hirshman, Dale Grantstrom, Mark Simpson, John Carter, Lynn Stafford, Mitch Gilbert, Dave Grafe, Mike Winter, Bryan Daste, Arnie Dressehhaus on lap, Tucker Jackson, Bernie and yours truly. Did I forget any? Also present was Tom Baker of Sierra and quite a showing of enthusiasts as well as a good asortment of items for sale. Steels on hand were 8 Emmons (6 PPs!), 2 Sho-Bud, 2 Sierra, 2 Carter, 1 Mullen, 1 MSA, 1 ZB Custom, 1 Fessenden and 1 10 string lap. The highlight, of course, was all the great pickin' that was going on. What a great showing of styles and comraderie!

Wow, what an event! Let's not wait so long to do this again. I want to add my thanks as well to the folks that Doug mentioned. I regretted having to leave a little early because of a conflict in my schedule. It was just about the time I was starting to get over my jitters of having to play something that made since when it was me turn...ha! For the record Arnie's last name is Dressehhaus and he can play the heck out of the lap steel! He, along with his wife, Shannon and I play in a band together. It was a real treat to hear some really fine picking by everyone there!!

Some folks likely don't remember this, but it was LARRY BEHM who worked extremely hard to pull all the steel players together for the very first Portland Metro Area Steel Jam. If my memory is anywhere accurate, that was held at the Gateway Elks Lodge in Northeast Portland, just off 102nd Avenue. Sorry, I can't recall the date or even the year but it was a fine event.
We're fortunate to have Larry in our area and a gentleman that is thoroughly dedicated to steel guitar and our kind of music. Quite obviously, Larry's not at all afraid of a challenge........and getting the job done RIGHT!

Thanks for all of the praise but I make it look easy, just call 10 guys, have them call everyone they know and off we go.

For those out there who are not familiar with the Northwest steelers we are one picking bunch. Many have played over 25 years and they are not in their mid 50's yet. We are blessed fo sure. When you add the Washington St players we can fill a house in no time.

Of the 22 players playing we had another 15 or so that could not make it, maybe next time.

The best part of all of this is that many players had not had a chance to meet one another even after years of playing in the same town. Things just happen you know. Our jams are just as much about the brotherhood as they are about the playing, in fact Robin had to ask several times if we were ready to "get back to picking" after several breaks.

Steel players are the greatest people, everyone is always ready to share information or give a friendly pat on the back to another that might not feel comfortable with the "big boys".

I think everyone there had a smile on their face for the whole day, I just love this stuff.
