UPDATE/EDIT: Chet has found the cause of the damage and it did actually happen in transit. Screws tips sticking through to the inside of the case damaged the end-plates and pedal bar in transit. Now that I know he didn't knowingly ship me a damaged item, I think we can come to a fair resolution. Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I'll post again once we resolve the situation.

----------------------------------------------------

As I previously posted, I bought an SD-10 from Chet Wilcox via ebay. We spoke on the phone and emailed a few times. I had a good idea of what to expect, at least I thought I did.

Today, UPS delivered it. The box was in good shape and the case was not damaged. When I took the guitar out of the plush lined case however, I found the end plates and pedal bar had deep, sharp gouges in them that could draw blood if one is not careful. Since there's no way that could have happened in transit in a plush case, it had to be packed and shipped in that condition. (EDIT: I was wrong about this. It did happen in transit because of screws in the case.) The auction details, which I have saved, clearly state "new with no signs of wear".

Chet has suggested I ship it back to him. I'm not thrilled with the idea of sending a "new" guitar back for repair. How would you handle this situation?

Ebay/Paypal has rules and protocols. In order to protect myself, I follow those rules and protocols when trading on Ebay.
There is also a dispute resolution process (which can get rather sticky) if you choose to go that route...
When stuff shows up broken etc., the seller is generally on the hook for it, but the buyer loses out in (re)shipping costs. That has pretty much been my experience.
There are few things as disappointing as opening a box to find damaged goods, but that's the downside reality of Ebay. I, too, have learned the hard way. Good luck with your resolution.

I would find some locally that could polish the parts, if you really must. That would probably cost less than shipping it back. Or just live with it, it won't affect the playability of the guitar. Even though it's a new guitar, his guitars are not finished to the standard of other builders. But he sells them cheaper, so it's a trade off, I guess.

Chet W is a respected member here Gary
that's why i suggested you send the steel back to him
it would'nt be in Chet's interest to burn you
rather repair the steel, send it back to you & thus maintain his reputation
as to pay for shipping, to be equitable, you pay one way & Chet pays the return ?
or if Chet goofed, then he pays both ways

Watching the news for the first time in 24 hours, I'm reminded that, to paraphrase Bogart, in the bigger picture, this issue doesn't amount to a hill of beans....
