| I recently went to a gig with a new (old) sho-bud volume pedal and my amp seemed extremely quiet, and I had to max out gain and yuck distortion prevailed. I went home and plugged in the trusty goodrich and the volume was much louder where I could back down the volume on the amp significantly. Do you think perhaps the throw from the string isn't correct on the sho-bud pedal? |

Most of these string-actuated pedals - including many Goodrich and ShoBud units - do not allow for complete travel of the pot on its axis, meaning that it can be adjusted for either full-on or full-off but not both, but as such the difference in output should not be more than maybe 10% and your situation sounds much more severe than that.
If the issue with this "new(old)" VP is the string throw then the range of motion will be limited. If the full range of pedal motion is available the issue is going to be elsewhere. Open it up and take a look at the condition of the wiring. Cold solder joints, frayed wires, dust bunnies and rusty jacks are all potential culprits.
If everything looks good check that:
(1) the pot is the correct value (250K to 500K)
(2) the pot is the correct taper (audio)
(3) the pot is wired correctly (one outside terminal connected to ground, the other outside terminal to the tip of the input (guitar) jack, the center terminal to the tip of the output (amp) jack. Both jack sleeves should also make a solid connection to ground, if the jacks have no wired ground connections check this out with an ommeter to be certain that the mounting surfaces are conducting as intended
(4) the pedal is plugged in according to (3) above
If none of this works out come back and tell us what you found, one way or another we'll get 'er to work  |

Did it work correctly before you did the gig?
If so, could it be a bad pot???
