The label in the F hole points to this being a guitar from the 70's...as does the speed knobs, grover tuning keys, trapeze tailpiece, and the burgundy color....these 70's 335's are fine guitars, but more in the 2500.00-3500.00 range...The 1961 ES335's had a stop tailpiece and dot inlays in the neck... _________________ https://www.reverbnation.com/bigredandtheresonators |

Yes, absolutely nothing about this that would imply a 1961, including the fact that it has chrome and not nickel parts, the red-lined case, plus everything else the previous member mentioned (the trapeze is of course the quickest giveaway). It looks like a nice guitar! Good luck with it once you get your facts straight in the listing, and the price more in line with what it is. |

Hi again,
Ron's guitar would be a 330 based on what he's written and the block inlays started in 1962 on that model (before that they had dots which is what you'd expect to find on the 335 here if it was actually a 61), which would look like what's on the 70s 335 that's for sale here.. Some big differences on a 330 though, P90 pickups instead of the humbuckers being a big item, the 330 is a true hollowbody without a center block like the 335, and of course the trapeze tailpiece yours would have and a 61 335 would have a stoptail or bigsby. I used to have a 1960 ES330, and that was one of the guitars that I shouldn't have parted with but that's another story.
Fortunately with the Internet it's much easier to check out item details than it used to be (even though wrong info also shows up of course) so some careful searching can usually turn up plenty of info. |

Yes, a serial number would definitely help (although far from necessary due to all the other issues; original label would have been a white oval and not the rectangular one in the pic). Gibson used several different numbering systems over the years, including a few different ones even during the 70s when this guitar was made. A picture of the back of the peghead would show the "made in USA" from the 70s and also the volute, neither of which were present in 1961. But based on what Orlando has said in his posting, I don't know what it would take to convince the seller. But, probably not worth too much time on this as I am pretty someone who would be in the market for a real 1961 and the dollars involved would do their homework before making such a purchase. And like I said before, the Internet is fairly loaded with information if you choose reliable sources. |
